Help identifying a loose sensor switch in the engine bay - 1.2 petrol estate SE

Featured Replies

Hi,

I hope you can help.

After an MOT and service , I have come away with a yellow steady oil warning light on the dash.

I had no problems before taking in and no problems in the 3 years of ownership so am a bit gutted as and poorer from the experience so far!

Part of the service was an oil change and the dip stick shows correct oil fill.

inside the engine bay I have found a switch that looks like it has been snapped off and cable tied back.

Can you help identify and indicate where it should go?

With the bonnet open and the engine running  I have taken the risk to activate the switch and the oil light cleared.

I then switched of the ignition and restarted and the oil light has stayed off.

This may have been opening and closing the bonnet or activating the unidentified switch .

As I was on my own , I cannot say if the oil light on the dash when out when activating the switch or from closing the bonnet.

Is the engine a TSI or HTP? Was it definitely the oil warning light and not some other symbol that might look like it? (If you have a picture of it that would be helpful.)

There are two possible warnings related to the oil system: pressure and level. The pressure switch is always fitted, the level switch may or may not be. The pressure switch is inserted into the oil pump housing and will not be a microswitch like the one you have pictured. The oil level sensor from what I can see would not be a microswitch either.

My hunch is that it might be the bonnet closed sensor or something like that.

Hi

Thanks for the reply . Car is a Fabia Se Tsi 85.

Definitely the oil warning light - see pic.

also attached closer shot of the mechanical switch.

Like you say it looks like it must register something is open or closed.

I have ordered a Haynes manual that should arrive tomorrow, could do with one anyway.

I tried googling images of engine bay switches but could not see this part and could not see a part number on the switch.

Wiring leads back to a main wiring trunking on the left hand side of bay (if viewed from the front)

It'll be the microswitch that senses whether the bonnet is open or closed, for sure. Gaffer tape it so the circuit thinks the bonnet is shut, and tie it up out of the way.

You should check to see if the connector is also unplugged from the oil level/temperature sensor in the sump; item 20 here cylinder block with pistons; oil sump - Fabia(FAB) [EUROPA 2014 year] (7zap.com)

Cheers. I will have look when it is light in the morning.

Light is out for now, and engine note and idle seem OK so will take for a short drive to see if oil light comes back on or any other issues.

As the switch is mechanical, I assume that without taping it is registering something as open

I thought the 'doors open' red warning  light would come on if the ECU thought the bonnet was open?

So not worth putting switch back where it should be?

Plastic mounting looks to be broken in your photo, so may be difficult to get back where it came from.  Yes, as it is now, it's seeing the bonnet as open.

Not sure but that may be the only problem.  I've seen quite a few posts on here that suggest that merely opening the bonnet is enough to cancel* the oil level low warning light.

Not seen the converse though, that an oil level warning can be prompted by having the bonnet appearing to be open.

Have a look under the car in daylight or torchlight. If the connector for the level/temp sensor is unplugged it may be dangling in clear view.

*temporarily, for some number of miles, I forget how many.

Thank again for taking the time.

I will post findings and any resolution .

To help others with same issue , do I rename the post subject or tag this is some way that so people can find the thread once we know what the issue and resolution is?

Click the three dots in the top right corner of your first post and see if you have an 'edit' option, I think you may not, it's time limited for non-Freedom members. If you do have the option, I think you can edit the title. If not, a kind moderator may be able to do so on your behalf.
