Can I use a universal OBD II reader on a Fabia or do I need one VAG specific?

Featured Replies

As the title says really.

I removed my front seat and unclipped the the sensor underneath. This has left a permanent seat belt warning on the dash but I know full well everything was re-fitted perfectly. That just leaves me with needing a code reader to clear it. Can I get a universal one or is there a specific one I need for the VAG group cars?

A generic OBD scan tool will only be able to read OBD standard codes from the engine and transmission. For anything beyond this you will need a VAG specific tool. IIRC there's a thread in the diagnostics section of people with VAG specific tools who are willing to help out other owners: you might find someone near you there who is willing to help you out.

Thats bizarre as I have had both my front seats out on my 2009 Greenie and had no warning light come on! Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a little while, then seeing if the light is on still, once reconnected?  It can't help and you should only need to reset the window auto function, which is simplicity itself. The audio, at least if standard, will do a self test and then resume.

If you turn on the ignition while any part of the airbag system is disconnected you'll get a warning light that can only be reset with diagnostics. If you left the ignition off it would explain why you got no warning.

Disconnecting the battery will make no difference for the OP at this point.

I think this is what has happened. I have got a cheap OBD reader now to clear it which I haven't yet tried. Next jobs on my list is a complete coolant flush, oil and filter change, antenna base replacement and a closer look at the air intake hose

An OBD tool won't be able to access the airbag controller as it is not part of the OBD standard.
