I have attempted doing my timing belt. All went well until I went to remove the canshaft locking tool. Any ideas?

Putting a bit more pressure on the belt between the cams allowed the tool to be removed. Both timing tools can be reinserted after rotating the crank twice so engine is still timed ok. Now I just need to try and get the alternator and engine mount back in😢

Good enough, if only I was still brave enough to do that, something has always stopped me manning up to changing cam belts on my own cars!  I've changed toothed belts on other machines though, but they didn't have pistons and valves to contend with!

Every thing is now back together and working. Some bits are very arkward to reach. Took 5 days a bit longer than expected. But the actual belt swap was fairly simple once everything was out of the way. My old belt after 6 years and 53000 miles was in very good condition with no signs of wear. The interval of 5 years seems a bit soon. At least it's done now.

 

Belt, tensioner and pully £147 from tps.

Ea211 locking tools £50 on Amazon

Laser 7279 pulley holding tools £90 amazon

Also needed 21mm 12 point impact socket to remove the crank pulley. Could not get it loose with a breaker bar on jackstands. So I had to wait a day for that

 

Probably better to get it done at the dealer but at least I've got the stuff for next time

 

Now that you have bought the extra tools needed, doing it every 5 years/50K miles sounds like a plan that will work well for you.

 

My wife's Polo 1.2TSI 110PS was new in August 2015 and is only at 32K miles, so I'm planning on leaving it for another year and a half - or so.

 

Was the tensioner also in good condition?

 

Maybe a new auxiliary belt at the same time.

I went to my local dealer for a quote on changing the timing belt as my car just turned 5 and is on 96k miles (Skoda recommends changing the belt every 80k, whoops)

 

Skoda charge £449 for just the belt, and £549 for the belt and water pump.  I've also just got a quote from a local garage which will do it for £363 for parts and labor.  As much as I want to change it myself, I dont have the time and I can't afford to have my car off the road for more than a day currently.

 

Also got a major service to do myself along with new brakes all round.

the tensioner seemed ok. The auxiliary belt has to come off anyway so I got a new one. I think it was £20 from skoda.

£549 for both doesn't seem too bad. is that for a diesel. On the TSI a water pump is 180 just for the parts. On the newer TSI the waterpump is on the opposite side of the engine. I think I got quoted over £800 for both. I believe doing the water pump is simple labour wise compared to timing belt. 

2021 so new Fixed Service and Maintenance pricing on 3-10 year old cars at participating dealers. 

 Others might charge less, or on the other hand more.

The Waterpump is a separate unit on these. You can see it at No.15 on the diagram (Part no - 5G0 965 567 A)

Are you sure that that is the main water pump that gets driven off the back of the exhaust cam shaft, and not just the  charge cooler electric water pump?
