Aux high beam lights?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone and happy new year!

I am about to mount aux high beam led lights above the reg plate. My car has projector lights with the single H7 bulbs. I am sratching my head how to mount wiring so when I turn on high beam the led lights turn on same time. I cant find any info on this.

The wiring loom has relay what needs to be connected to either high beam wiring or in this case somewhere else.

Please shed some light of wisdom on me.

There is a pic of the lights.

Hi can't remember the regs for this but they have to be a certain height and distance in from the end of the wing/car to be legal  please check first as you can save yourself a lot of hassle later if they are fitted correctly, hope it works out looks good

Those are 100% legal here in Finland if used with high beam. It would be easy to install if there would be H4 bulbs or two H7 but with one H7 and projector lights I have no idea where to get power to relay. There must be a wire what powers the shutter mechanism that dips the beam.

I hope you all understand what I mean. English is not my native language.

From memory any auxiliary lights in the UK designed or intended to work alongside a dipped beam must adhere to certain legal conditions. Front fog lights for example have to be within certain set measurements to be legal and must have a separate warning light and switch. On main beam you can fit pretty much fit what you like, blow your alternator up if you like. Checkout your average HGV tractor unit or tyre fitters van to see how many spot and driving lights can be bolted to the front of a vehicle.....   In regards to the feed for the aux high beam led lights I would take a piggy back fuse feed from either of the left or right main beam fuses in the main fuse box under the dashboard.

OP is in Finland, regulations may be different there. They are also planning to have them switch on with the main beam rather than the dipped beam.

Each headlamp has a 10-pin connector going into it carrying all electrical signals into it. The white wire on pin 8 on each connector activates the focus shutter for main beam. I would suggest tapping those to switch a relay to turn on your auxiliary lamps. This should avoid problems with the bulb-out warning system. Get a power supply for them from the permanent 12 V bus bar on the fuse panel.

Thanks for the advice. I need check these. Wiring diagram would be nice to have.

Make sure any relay you use has a flyback diode in parallel with the coil; or add one. Voltage spikes when the relay is de-energised can cause trouble with whatever is driving the relay otherwise, especially if it is a semiconductor device.

You can buy them from https://erwin.skoda-auto.cz/erwin/showHome.do

A 24 h subscription is about €30 and is lots of time to grab all of the service manuals for your car. You can get the build sheet there too which lists all the PR codes for your car.

No Need to pay for anything really, this is pretty straightforward to do.........these would be simple to wire up for main beam use only.

Below is a simple wiring diagram and the yellow "high beam wire" would be the wire which feeds the shutters on the headlamps for main beam.

I have also attached wiring for the car Left hand Headlamp..........you would need to confirm by checking your vehicle,

but PIN 8 of the headlamp 10 Pin connector should be a white wire which is + 12v live with main beam selected ON, if that is the case, then tap into this and it need

to be connected to PIN 86 of the relay as in diagram below.

Pics!

From Finland also and exactly the same problem.

I tried to find correct wire for an hour but couldn't find right connection visible enough to measure. But now I have it and tomorrow we'll have more light!

Our lights are Strands Siberia 22" SR and they are going to be quick mounted with M8 quick release clamps. While in city we won't have them mounted and leaving city we'll mount them by just clamping and attaching their plug.

Relax, someone unqualified will be along with a pseudo-legal opinion shortly.

That would be amusing... Our laws and regulations state that I cannot connect that DRL if I don't disconnect built in ones first. So, that'll remain for later use (maybe).

Later last night we decided to complete the installation and we were successful. Pics for proof :)

Wire for light goes under the left headlight assembly and behind the top part of mask to right side and from there to the light through the lower grille.

Attaching the ground of lights wiring harness was pain in the butt, simply minimal to none space available for tools.

Hey. How did you do the mounting? Did you drill any holes in the bumper or did you attach it to the license plate frame? Does it sit firmly?

We did screw new, better screws with the power drill while attaching the bar mount/plate frame. We measured the center point and marked places for couple screws. Attached loosely first and after screwing in half of the screws we tightened them.

Plate needed new screws anyway because they were almost completely rotten.

Great! Thanks for the response.

Thank you @UrbanPanzer for pointing out the white cable (PIN 8 of the headlamp 10 Pin connector) that I needed to connect to!

Just wondering if a fuse tap would work. I want to do this project but want a master switch of sorts mounted to the dash so that I can chose if I want the light bar to turn on with my main headlamps or not.
