fabia 1 1.2 60bhp timing chain or belt

Featured Replies

Having just replaced the faulty door wiring harness on the mrs Fabia I would like to replace it's cambelt, Its overdue I believe on a 11 year old car, but it has only done 27K.

I believe this 60bhp model is a chain driving 1 camshaft, rather than a belt or twin cam am I right? Is it hard to do? I have done belts, chains and twin cams previously, obviously with a locking kit?

At that mileage it's completely unnecessary, chains don't age like belts but they eventually stretch through mileage.

Brilliant thanks. I thought that the low mileage would make a chain change unnecessary. Thank you.

Timing chain fitted to these models mileage is fine just make sure to change oil and filter at regular, stops tensioner sticking and causing damage to engine

Always was fanatical about oil & filters, for the sake of £50 why would anybody not do it themselves? This Fabia has had a full service every year regardless of mileage. Which means 11 oil changes, 1 for every year we've had it and it's only done 27K. A semi synthetic oil change every 2.5K should keep the cam chain well lubed. Thanks for all advice and help.

And look into how much the chain has elongated in about 100 000 miles time, probably not enough to matter.

Wow Wino that oil really is a bargain, I'll take a look

At the rate my Mrs clocks up miles, I reckon 100K should come up in the year 2050, but she does love her Fabia so much that she'll prob still own it.

Might be worth investing in a spare head, and get its exhaust valves and guides changed in that case.  Might never need it, but might save a day or two of downtime if the need ever does arise.  Must be able to pick up secondhand head for very little I'd think.

Having a spare ignition coilpack (and a handheld code reader) in the glovebox is probably a good precaution too.

Already got the code reader and a spare coil pack is a good idea. It's a good idea for any car, if only owners didn't ignore their cars, then whine when they go wrong. My OCD kicks in a bit this time of year, especially when I see really expensive cars that obviously haven't even had a wash for months. Looking after a car is respect for the tech that most take for granted.
