Rear camera retrofit

Featured Replies

I would like to add the rear camera, using all the functionalities of the original one.

I own a Kodiaq S-Tech My2021.

I saw some option on Amazon, much cheaper than the original , but I'm not too confident that could work as advertised.

Any suggestion's welcome.

Thanks.

I would pass all non original camera products. Leaking , video signal problems (chinese one on my Superb II) etc etc.

And you need not only camera, but wiring harness and a module (cannot rmember it`s name) which draws all the lines on your screen and transponds the video signal to headunit.

Thanks I know.

I've seen this kit on Ebay, around 200 euros:

"Using all Genuine Skoda parts from the wiring looms to the camera to the module, this system will fit in perfectly into your Skoda Kodiaq and will look and work as if it were fitted from factory.  This system utilises a camera that is integrated with the original boot handle.

This system will intergrate with your factory Optical Parking System (If you already have it installed) and will provide a pretty nifty overlay on top of the Reverse Feed.

Features:

    130° viewing angle.
Displays real live image on the Skoda Navigation System.
Automatically switches to the rear view image as soon as the reverse gear is engaged.
Will work in conjunction with the Acoustic and Optical Parking System (if fitted.)
Real time image overlaid with coloured graphics to aid positioning.
    Dynamic display of camera lines.
Professional installation can be offered - "optional" or just coding service.
Price advertised is for the supply of one set of Skoda genuine camera.
    Original Skoda parts.

Compatibility:

Skoda Kodiaq
"

Do you think I would need a camera module too?

I'm assuming you're not in the UK as you have an S-Tech. As Linni said, I'd stick with a proper Skoda supplied camera, but my local dealer wanted £520 to fit one.

Luckily I managed to find a local independent garage to fit an original Skoda supplied one for £370. If you go that route, make sure the garage is accredited to plug into the VAG computer system as the camera will need coding.

Actually I found this one around 300.

I live in Italy, will have a look at some garage and or at some Skoda dealer, but I guess it will be expensive.

Absolutely, if you want the guidelines. And you need video transformator anyway.

Yes a dealer will be expensive, an independent will be cheaper. If you buy the one you've linked to and try to fit it yourself, it's not an easy fix if you don't know what you're doing, especially taking the rear hatch panel off without breaking something. Whoever fits it, don't forget the cost of coding it. Over here, even some dealers don't know how to do that.

Be very careful choosing camera.

As you can see, on the first picture the camera is on the left side of the handle and on the second picture it`s on the right side.

Things might look good, but often they are not, if we are talking about chn stuff.

Here is original camera:

Well, this site declares this camera can draw lines:

I still would investigate a bit, because I doubt it can do it without module. But I am not sure, maybe newer cars has the feature onboard.

On a 2021 car, I would not expect to need the separate module for moving guidelines.

Instead, the camera itself will have a CAN-bus connection and create the moving lines. It will be a very similar fitting to the MQB Octavia, there is a Chinese and genuine camera mentioned in this thread:

First question is what headunit do you have?

Do you have a MIB2/2.5 or a MIB3? I only ask as I've not seen much info on the MIB3 units so the guide may not be ideal.

How do I know the Mib version?

Should be version 3 but I’m not sure.

For Columbus for example if you have only Home and Menu buttons on left of the screen, it`s MIB 3. If more buttons, then its MIB 2.

There should be a model number under settings, system information I think? Try posting that :)

Looks like 2,5 to me.

Do you have Android Auto on it? Is it wired operation or wireless?

Wireless Android auto

MIB 3 then.

So could I get a super cheap alibaba cam and just connect it and code it?

Seems yes, you could do it. Still, 100 euros difference between Alibaba and original one could make a big difference.

I would go with OEM one  #kit with washer#.

1: The picture shows the new steering wheel so that's obviously a MIB3 system.

2: What's important about MIB3? With older versions anyone with the appropriate software could enable ( code ) your camera. With MIB3 however the code is security protected so for the moment at least, only those with official VW Group systems can enable the camera for you.

3: I bought my kit from here: Skoda-Parts. Just make sure that's the correct camera for your car. The kit includes everything you need as if the camera were fitted at the factory. ( even comes with all the cable ties and tubing to hook it up to the rear wash/wipe system ). It also includes detailed instructions. What you will also require of course is someone to fit it and enable the camera.

4: It costs only Euro175?  Yes. The biggest expense is obviously the fitting as lots of trim needs to be removed. That however is not rocket science. I bought the kit a few weeks back. Once lockdown is over, my plan is to remove all the trim myself and fit the rear camera according to the instructions. I'm not even going to bother with a 3rd party Skoda specialist, I'll just take the car down to my local Skoda dealer and have the camera enabled. Assuming I haven't screwed up the installation, it shouldn't take them  long to enable the camera.

Hopefully it'll end up that I have the same factory system cheaper than it would have been when I ordered the car.

It's sort of like the mk5 Golf I bought in 2007. It cost something like £275 to order cruise control as a factory option or have the dealer fit exactly the same system for £150 when the car arrived at the dealership. I chose the latter.

Hope that helps. I have the kit beside me right now so any questions fire away.

The OEM camera has it's own Can bus connectivity so no need for an additional module. Once fitted it needs both coding and calibrating. I'd be surprised if the 2 year parts warranty remained valid if it wasn't calibrated.

Thanks Scot, I will check with some dealer If they can mount the parts for me and what they are going to charge for it.

I guess I will buy the kit from Skoda parts.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi, it's my guide that is linked in this thread. I can't comment specifically if the parts mentioned will work, however it works on all facelift Octavia vrs' up to a 20 plate. If it works it is plug and play, no coding, no calibration required.

Good luck with whichever solution you go with (the washer jet is a waste of time btw IMHO -  had one on my Karoq, didn't really keep it clean)
