Front brake upgrade on MK2 Fabia 1.6 TDI

Featured Replies

@AMD87

& i never cooked the sh!t OEM Fabia vRS Mk2 brakes on the hottest of summer days on the quickest hill roads where no camera vans are there to catch you speeding and if they were you would see them miles off.

But then i use the throttle for accelerating and manual down shifts for slowing and hardly ever brake.

I have only ever crashed while braking and the tyres losing grip, never ever while accelerating.

@Carlston The OP has a 1.6tdi Monte Carlo so what is the point of going through the history of Fabia and brake sizes ?   What car is it you drive and is this in the UK,   Is it still a MK1 Fabia estate?               Do you fill your Fabia with friends or loved ones and drive like an idiot on the wonderful driving roads where nobody else went out that fine day.   Where is this parallel universe in which you drive where a Fabia Monte Carlo with serviced brakes and a remap is cooking the brakes?

Just a Sunday drive someplace in Germany with someone in a 220ps Fabia with DSG.

Appropriate brake hardware and fluids will be getting used obviously.

They "only" have a normal 1.6 tdi. Am I right in saying that only monte carlo tdis got 288mm brakes and regular tdis were 256mm?

@DieselMonte Someone here will know for certain if all 75ps 1.6 TDI Monte Carlo had the same disc size as the 105ps got.

Then there are early cars without ESP as standard, it was an option on some Mk2 Fabia, and then there are those without a TC / ASR button.

I hope you don't mean you use a manual gearbox, changing down to slow down... This is a great way to 5hag a gearbox! Brakes to slow, gears to go is the mantra used by EVERY driving instructor and driving instruction manual. If you slow by gears and hardly ever brake, don't be surprised by another driver slamming in to the rear of your vehicle, either. You will, of course, blame them for driving too close but hey- thats a great way to make a claim for damages and whiplash for you and your four  invisible passengers! (Not you personally, you understand but thats what scammers may well do).

If you are going rear discs know that discs arent as good for handbrake turns in my experience. Saying that, Both of my fabias have ****e handbrakes as is.

@mrgf

It is 45 years since i drove anything other than 2 pedal cars, unless they had a servo clutch and the gearboxes have done just fine.

The beauty of an Automated Manual, a DSG, a CVT or an Auto, and then even more so a EV is you can do lots of miles with lots of smiles and never touch the brakes.

Very handy really when you have only 1 foot and it is a left one.

@e-Roottoot imagine if we brought xds into it that will really confuse them.

@AMD87

I always put mine to off or at least less than the factory setting.

& when narrower tyres or winter ones were on steering assistance to less.

Than considering the weight and brakes i removed the 'success ballast weight' from the rear crash bar that VW had Skoda fit, while with every other model they were trying to reduce weight, emissions and increase fuel economy.

Mines has been off since it ate the pads at Donington.

Love having a properly LSD now though.

Thats fair enough, then e-roottoot. You would be surprised by how many peeps still insist on slamming down the gas of a manual gearbox, to slow, though. Then they wonder why the gearbox has teeth like Shane MacGowan!

Monte Carlo is just a trim option.

I suspect whether the Fabias got 256mm or 288mm brakes is down to the power rating of the engine, whether it's a heavyweight or lightweight engine, and to a small extent what MK the Fabia is.

90PS diesels and 91PS 1.6 petrols seem to get 288mm brakes but 90PS/95PS 1.0/1.2 petrols and 75PS 1.2 diesels seem to get 256mm brakes. Sometimes it's down to whether it's a Fabia MK2 or a Fabia MK3. The Fabia MK3 1.2 petrol 110HP has 288mm brakes but the Fabia MK2 1.2 petrol 105HP has 256mm brakes.

wheel-size.com often makes mistakes, so it's best to measure the diameter of the front discs yourself or check the build code.

Some of the above could be wrong because wheel-size.com often make mistakes. For example, the smallest wheel size that wheel-size.com lists as fitting the Skoda Fabia MK2 1.4TSi 179PS is 16". However, the Fabia has never come with factory fitted discs bigger than 288mm, so 15" wheels will fit.

I will be looking to upgrade the front brakes on my TDI.

Can you share your suggestions?

Fabia MK1 288mm front discs (silver)

These 288mm front brakes are the same as the Fabia MK1 RS front brakes, except they are silver. The calipers and carriers on the RS model are either green or red. However, get the silver because green and red are difficult/impossible to obtain new.

The best prices I've seen on ebay for new genuine TRW parts comes to about £240. This is for calipers (£130), carriers (£50), and discs (£60). It doesn't include other parts such as brake pads or brake fluid.

On the Fabia, these silver 288mm front brakes were used from 2000-2010, these green 288mm front brakes from 2000-2008, and these red 288mm front brakes from 2005-2008.

On the Fabia, different calipers and carriers were used with the 288mm front discs from 2011 onwards, although the front brake discs were still the same.

Thank goodness for Briskoda parts for sale where members might be selling brake hardware suitable for doing upgrades, or breaking cars with suitable parts.  Then eBay etc where refurbished calipers and the likes can be purchased to upgrade brakes, and often sold by enthusiasts that know what parts are needed rather than guessing.

Sometimes being the key word. I have a mk2 1.2 petrol 105HP which has 288mm front brakes from the factory, however it is the monte carlo trim.

The monte carlo trim wouldn't have made any difference to whether you had 256mm or 288mm brakes. The HP of the engine might have done. For example, the 1.2TSi 105HP has 288mm front brakes, but the 1.2TSi 86HP might have 256mm front brakes.

It looks like wheel-size.com made a mistake on the MK2 1.2 petrol 105HP because they claim that 14" wheels will fit.

I've added the MK2 1.2TSi 105HP to the 288mm front brakes list.

I would have thought that the MK2 1.6TDi 105HP and the MK2 1.9TDi 105HP would have 288mm front brakes, but wheel-size.com again claim that 14" wheels will fit those models.

That list ^ is also wrong with regard to 239mm brakes. Some mk1 1.2 64hp also got 239mm. I know because my partner owns one. Other mk1's with that engine also got 256mm, also not there.

Why work with a list/site that's known to contain inaccurate info?

The idea is to give a general idea. Anyone is welcome to continue the list if you have more accurate information. It's always a good idea to measure the diameter of the brake discs yourself. It's easy to do, if you know what the options are, such as either 239mm, 256mm, or 288mm.

As you can see below there's no mention of 13" wheels being able to fit the Fabia MK1 1.2i 12V 64HP.

I'm a big fan of 13" wheels, especially when fitted with 175/70R13 tyres...which is what the original Golf MK1 GTI used. Lesser models used skinny 155/80R13.

The car I mentioned came on 14s not 13s.

You do rather "inflict" your excitement about small wheels on a lot of other peoples' threads. Why not start your own?
