The ZT260 are fairly cheap now, they can be picked up from about £10k most have lowish mileage (what do you expect from that fuel consumption lol)

Like John said it's the de-tuned verison of the Ford mustang V8. I like the Rover ZT if I had 10K spare I'd buy one. (only as a second car)

Out of the list though it wouldn't be my first choice

Just did some googling on them, but they fall in the same pipe and slippers category as the Jaguar for me. Powerful/cheap they may be, but not for me.

Really, Q, go and test drive the Mazda...

Q's local Mazda dealer is located in an excellent test driving spot too - which ever way you turn you cant help but find a great road. Go on...........

How about a nearly-new Mitsubishi Galant (if you can find one)? Solid, reliable, comfortable, and totally anonymous...

There are Ralliart prep'ed ones out there iirc, VR-6 model with same power as Evo's, look very imposing in estate form with the standard blacked-out rear windows, well spec'ed as well...

I looked at those but they're apparently expensive if they break and the interior is rather shabby.

I looked at the VR4's and have to agree with Phil. Quite a step down when compared to the likes of the new Legacy :D

Looking at the Mazda MPS on their website and although it looks an impressive car I can't help but think that a fiver under £24k is an awful lot of money and at least £4k more than a similarly spec'd OctyII VRS.

I think that because you have asked us for our opinions on this forum that your decision has almost be made before you posted this thread ;)

Glad to see you are focusing your sales techniques on someone else now and not me!!! :P

Guys (and girls ;)), don't get carried away here.

I've not made my mind up yet, and am considering/investigating all suggestions. I've seen a few MPS's on the road now, and I wasn't particular impressed by the looks of the rear, but then again, neither am I impressed by the looks of the Octy's front. Have yet to find any time to go round dealers and kick a few tyres, although I did manage to arrange a testdrive in a mk2 Octy on Tuesday after my local dealer called me to say they got the hatchback available (their original demonstrator got apparently stolen).

The more I look at the Legacy, the more I think it is going to be a financial disaster. Not to mention that it doesn't have a turbo and 'only' 245bhp out of 3L, with no (that I could find) potential to squeeze more out of it.

The Mondeo has fallen further down the list too as it is common as muck... even in ST220 disguise.

Still, tomorrow I'm gonna go past a few dealers and see what we can come up with

As far as the Lagacy goes, I'd have thought the fact it doesn't have a turbo and still has 245bhp would be a bonus? much less to go wrong, better power delevery, i.e. no turbo lag, and the fact it's a Subaru means virtually bulletproof mechanicals, so financialy at least, it shouldn't be a disaster.

Update

Had a test drive today in a Race Blue Octavia vRS, and I am in love :orb_love_

Had a good offer for my car too (considering it's milage), but unfortunately, when sense put my feet firmly back on the floor, I had to be realistic and admit that to change now would mean spending

Was that a stickered up 'special' one from Winchester Q?

  • Author

Nope, dealer supplied demonstrator with 250 miles on the clock. Didn't feel fast at all until I looked at the speedometer

The one I was referring to belongs to Winchester Skoda.

I'm nowhere near Winchester though. I live down in Aylesbury... oop norf ;)

Sorry mate - for some reason I had it stuck in my mind that you were further down.
