Fabia Mk3 won't move when first starting

Featured Replies

Hoping for some advice here. I have a 2016 skoda fabia mk3 colour edition and it is my first ever car. I don't claim to know a lot about cars as a whole so not sure how severe this problem is. Basically i've noticed when i get in the car for the first time in a day, the car starts fine but when i take the handbrake off, it doesn't want to move.

I can feel it trying to move and if I'm trying to reverse i can feel the back of the car raise as i ease off the clutch but the wheels are just locked in place.

I can eventually get it moving by repeating the process of reengaging and disengaging the handbrake and slowly easing off the clutch/gently accelerating so i suspect that it's just the rear brakes siezing up but i'm not certain and i don't know how serious this is or whether it will get worse.

Cheers in advance for any advice.

Sounds like the rear pads are sticking to the discs due to the damp atmosphere at the moment.

If you are parking on a fairly level road, leave the handbrake off when parking but in 1st or reverse gear, which will prevent the car from moving.

Cheers for the quick response! Sounds about right, i'll make sure to do that from now on.

Thanks again

Mine is doing the same.

It helps if you go forward first to unstick them.

You can also apply the handbrake gently while driving just before finishing the journey.

This will dry them off before you leave the handbrake on for the night.

Spelling mistake, again.

@barratt32, does your car have rear disc brakes or rear drum brakes? If it has rear disc brakes you should see the shiny disc swept surface through the wheels, if it has rear drum brakes all you will see is a mid grey or rusty coloured brake drum.

Now, if it has rear drum brakes, maybe that car has never ever had its brakes serviced, so as the brake dust builds up, the chances of the drum brakes sticking on in wet weather increases sharply - even more than the normal sticking that happens with rear disc brakes.

I always used to rock the car back and forward to break the wheels from an icy grip.

Of course you may be mistaking "hill hold"?

Drum rear brakes also do not like going backwards first as well.

Thanks, AG Falco
