Another headlight problem

Featured Replies

My 2010 Elegance estate with bi xenons is pretty poor in the lighting department. The xenons do their little dance on start up, up, down, left and right. The cornering fogs work OK but throw of the dipped beam is poor. I can't see a bend in the unlit road some 20 yards ahead, unless of course main beams are on, luckily I know its there.

The bulbs are about 11 years old, could that be the problem or is it the levelling sensor I've been reading about despite the startup dance working ok, or do they just need adjustment as per another thread.

If the levelling sensor does need replacing is it easy to do, where is it, and is it a dealer only part and does it need coding with vcds.

HID bulbs fade over time. If yours are on the original bulbs, it might be time to swap them out. If the leveling sensors fail, the AFS functionality will shut down and you'll get a warning on the dash.

As a newcomer to Superbs, hoping to have my first one very soon, I must ask whether it is expensive to replace the xenon bulbs?

Many thanks

Excellent thanks chimaera, that's what I was hoping to hear and hopefully something I can manage to do myself

Many thanks

I've just ordered Osram Xenarc D1s from Amazon for £72

If the arm breaks on a level sensor, you won't get a system fault but it will effect the aim.

Take a look to check both are in good condition and not snapped 👍

Any idea over what time frame they fade? thanks

Ah right thanks. Where will I find them?

Front and rear suspension on the passenger side.

You can see some pictures from my Octavia which should be very similar in this thread:

Great thanks,  I was about to say I'm sorted thanks. I found a youtube video showing one being replaced on the rear, I missed the bit about the front one. Also it was on a foreign car so on the offside (to us in the UK). Either way it looks easy enough.

Problem solved. Turns out it is a broken linkage on the rear levelling sensor. The problem I'm having is not knowing which new part to buy. On the Autodoc website they show several replacements for my 2010 Superb as just being what looks like the electronic box with a moving plastic lever. Another much more expensive item (£71) seems to show the same electronic box as above but with brackets and metal rods attached. I'll give them a ring tomorrow.

I think you want 3T0 941 273: https://www.cars-equipment.com/www/en/shop/sensor/oem-3t0941273-xenon-autoleveling-sensor-for/

Might be worth taking a few pictures of what's fitted so you can compare :)

Many thanks Langers. I will take some pictures as soon as I can. Its hard to say from the link if it matches what is on the car. The website seems to indicate that the front is different to the rear. I never considered they would be different. I was going to replace the r front as well as it did seem very stiff, unless it was just under load from the suspension.

This is the page I am looking at which, to my mechanically uneducated eyes, seems a clearer image of the rear sensor but I will try and confirm it with some pictures.

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/spares-search?keyword=sensor&kbaStr[0]=Fl60mvu&car_id=32788&model_id=8495&maker_id=106&brandNo[0]=6558&sort_categories[0]=3721

The brackets etc can be specific to the front or rear (car model etc), however, I think the actual sensor is the same. That being said, there is a good chance just the link arm has snapped but I don't think it's available as a separate part.

For the front, I'd spray some lubricant on the two ball joints, it should be pretty stiff as it'll only move with the suspension.

This is where I found the part numbers: https://7zap.com/en/catalog/cars/Skoda/brand/17/0/Superb/Superb (2009 - 2013)/Skoda/bHA4RXNnejhaZy9idGVqT1daWFFRdz09--/6bbffde8b5b8077d2d0a5796da6eea3c:4c2e20e94021f4be4d301b9c2ce0a9f0/universal/10110->12847/bHA4RXNnejhaZy9idGVqT1daWFFRdz09--::632941250::941025::383862/bHA4RXNnejhaZy9idGVqT1daWFFRdz09--::632941250::941025::383862

The autodoc page might be using generic images. I'd contact https://www.coverdalecarparts.co.uk/ with your reg/vin and ask about the rear sensor, they've been great whenever I've needed bits and reasonable for a VAG parts supplier :)

Thanks again langers, your knowledge and help is really appreciated. It's good to have to hand all of these sites and suppliers for future reference.

Because of my uncertainty and lack of mechanical knowledge I've been in touch with my usual mechanic who deals with TPS a lot so I'll wait and see what he comes back with but if they can't help I will definitely give Coverdale a ring.

Bearing in mind what others have said about bulbs I invested in a couple of new Osram Xenarcs (this was before I discovered the faulty sensor) and I have to say the difference is amazing, so much brighter but still obviously pointing down.

Thanks again for taking the time to help.

I have a brand new genuine VW 3T0 941 273 for sale it is complete except missing the rod which was the only bit the garage used.  If interested PM me.

Too late thanks I've bought the part and fitted it. I don't think it would have been any good to me anyway as it was the linkage that was broken not the sensor.

It doesn't seem to have helped. Prior to me putting the new sensor in I'm sure my headlights did the little dance setting up on first switching on, now they don't but they appear to be turning OK with the steering wheel when I'm driving. There are no warning lights on the dash. Is it possible the front sensor needs changing as well?

I've done a VCDS scan and nothing shows up to do with the headlights, just something to do with motorised flaps in the heating vents, I can't remember the exact wording.

VCDS scan

This is my scan showing no faults with the headlights, I think. The only fault that is recent is the climatronic flaps fault. I tried the reset buttons but that did nothing. All of the headunit faults are because I changed the Columbus for an android headunit. The only fault at the moment that concerns me is the headlight issue but no faults are showing in vcds, as far as I can tell anyway, I'm no expert with VCDS.

That all seems happy.

Sometimes it's easy to miss the headlight dance but I can't see anything to suggest a problem. Maybe have a helper jump in the car and start it while you watch the projectors to see if they move? Obviously from the side so they don't completely blind you :D

Thanks again langers. The car is parked facing a wall at home so the headlight dance is usually obvious but I'll have another look tonight

I've checked several times now at night and the headlights are definitely not doing "the dance". I'm at a loss now. I'll get the wheels off tomorrow and check the sensors again.

Hopefully just pointing out something obvious that you've already checked, but is the headlight switch set in the 'Auto' position?

It is yes. I only ever use the auto position.

The saga continues. I've plugged in my VCDS again and decided to follow a Youtube video about setting up and aligning my xenons after fitting new bulbs. I don't know if it is needed or not. This is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqaJasC_h-A.

I got so far and mine seemed to stop at a point in the screenshot below

Whereas in the Youtube video the second box had the word "headlights" inserted and as you can see from the Youtube screenshot "Adjust" in the first box whereas mine just had the word "Activate" in the first box and nothing else. I admit I do not understand VCDS too much but I did follow the instructions in the video and couldn't replicate it in my car. I also note that he was using version 17.8.1 whereas I am up to date with version 20.12.0.

Does this indicate that there is a fault on my headlights that VCDS isn't picking up.

I think at that point you just hit the On/Off/Next button a few times to complete the basic settings.

I'd be tempted to log the front/rear sensor output along with the up/down and left/right motor positions as you go for a drive. That'll confirm if the system is working.

The AFS system is pretty good at throwing faults/warnings so given you have neither, it seems like its fine?

The missing startup dance is weird, I'd definitely expect to see it with the headlights on as you start the car at night.
