New to the game - 2011 FL Skoda Octavia vRS TSi

Featured Replies

So I bit the bullet and bought this lovely sleeper, I mean my god what a lovely package and jeez, is that the boot space ?? Gotta thank all you who posted regarding the advices and experiences regarding the 2.0 tsi blocks and as soon as i got it i sent it for a major service as its 100k km and obviously the tensioner and chain got done too. Threw in a new water pump and r8 coilpacks and did some checks for any leaks and its pretty mint now. At this point the indy garages pretty much had my car more then me but hey all for peace of mind amirite? But, Im extremely new to this, ive never had vw cars before and coming from a long line of JDMs its kind of scary going into something with very limited knowledge. I apparently have rattle at startup (sounds like its from the chain area. lasts for like a second or 2) and after trawling the forums (briskoda to golfmk6) and listening to every youtube video of a tsi starting i came to a conclusion and im not sure whether its just me and thats how the TSi picks up oil when its cold or its a camshaft bridge thing or its something else. I mean ive done the tensioner revision, used good oil, renewed whatever i could afford and its making me clench everytime i start it in the morning. are ea888s that rattly and sound like a diesel ? :worried:. any advice on where do i go from here? Oil pump? was it maybe the chain guides? Just trying to work out my options here because i thoroughly enjoy the car and would love to be using it for the years to come but i dont know where to go next. any advice would be appreciated honestly.

Mine still has the initial start up "rattle" literally lasts a second or so. I've had the chains tensioners, guides etc all done so i'm not overly concerned  Its also had a top end rebuild after I broke a valve spring, no issues reported other than the spring itself. These Tsi engines do seem a little noisy, probably a combination of direct injection and being chain driven.

yeah ive been told that these blocks are noisy. not used to hearing an engine tick like that i suppose.

They are distinctive engines, even the 1.4  twin charger I had in a golf sounded similar at initial start up and there can be an initial momentary rattle.  Why not record the audio, I'll try to do mine as well. With hood up would get capture noise better.  If the chain and tensioner and guides have been done properly you are ok there.  There is a momentary time for the hydraulic tensioners  edit: tappets to get pressure and will be clicky / rattly until then. You could get a mechanic to plug a gauge in for oil pressure but it isn't showing any warning lights?

There is also the evap purge release tap tap tap tap tap sound which can cycle on and off. But that usually is delayed a bit from initial start up.

My tsi has done it since new but not every time. I have had it for 7 years now and engine has not self destruct.

There is a recording of the noise of a member at startup on this thread and a link to a youtube of start up.

I'll try to record mine, my recollection is it doesn't always make the extra short duration rattle that fades out quickly, but may sometimes! Could be on longer extended periods without starting.

Here is one I prepared earlier, of mine warmed when it was 5yo, 39k miles and just had the tensioner and chain changed out.  "2.0tsi warm idle .m4a."  I'll get a startup recording maybe an updated warmed up one too!

Obviously it doesn't sound like that with the bonnet down or in the car.  I also put the diesel model insulation on the inside of the bonnet which quietened it down a little, when bonnet down and car idling.

This is mine recorded start up, after being left for 24 hours, Bonnet up.

When I checked this, after leaving it for 4 days, I did notice an extra rattle / clatter immediately, probably for less than a second.  It  may be that that you and others are referring to that does not happen all the time.
