Tell me about the 2000s VAG petrol engines!

Featured Replies

Evening,

As mentioned in another thread, despite having had 4 VAG cars, I've always had the same 1.9TDI PD engine.

I just wondered if someone could give me a rough summary of the good and bad VAG petrol engines from the 2000-2010 era? I know for example that the 1.4 in the MK1 fabia was the old pushrod engine, but don't really know anything about the rest. If it helps, I'm specifically thinking about those found in the Audi A4 (B6/B7), A6 (C5/C6), Octavia mk2, Golf mk4 and 5, Leon Mk2 and Exeo Mk1. I'm anticipating/hoping there's some crossover between each of those?

Sorry if that's a massive ask! Thinking of moving to petrol for the first time and want to know what to look for and what to avoid!

you will have to be a bit more specific, there are a lot of engines in that era.

Are you looking for a particular size? VW have a repuation from making some good Diesel engines over the years, I don't think they have done as well with Petrol IMO

Read up on chain tensioners.....

Avoid the 1.2 petrol in all it's forms, and generally anything with an Aluminium block. I'm also not a fan of any direct injection petrol engine.

Do you mean only the twin charger version?

SWMBO had a 2005 Fabia with a 1.2 3-cylinder normally aspirated engine for 11 years and it never missed a beat.

There were no 1.2 TSI Twinchargers from the VW Group.

Early 1.2 TSI to 2012 have possible Timing Chain & tensioner issues and there are upgraded parts.

Then there are some with issues after that up to the end of the Euro 5 ones so 2015.

Other 1.2 3 cylinder or 4 cylinder petrol engines might need paying attention to the consumables / servicing but they are out there in the millions and certainly not lemons generally.

I guess we must have been lucky then as SWMBOs 1.2 Fabia was bought in 2005 and sold in 2016 with no timing chain related issues.

That was a Euro 4 emissions car.

VW Group went crazy for Euro 5's and if they could not get the emissions required they just cheated and bothered more about non essential stylee parts on cars and euro pinched on engine components.

They bothered more about getting to the Number 1 biggest car manufacturers and forgot the car infront was a Toyota and actually reliable.

I wish. Toyota seemed to skip some environmental testing on the model we had. All 3 Land Cruiser Prados died when the temperature stayed above 49C for a few days. I got very sick of jogging to the garage in that heat to borrow jump leads every other day.😆

@camelspyyderyou did the R&D for them just as VW have with their customers.

The LC's were maybe not expected to have a long life if they got to the end user they were meant for in the taleban.

And high oil consumption

@SuperbTWMYou say avoid the 1.2 petrol in all forms, but really that just nonsense unless you want to point out in particular which might have an oil drinking issue.

I see you are not a fan of them, but then there are millions of them that are issue free.

There was an engine which had piston ring issues that drank oil, but I can’t remember if it was the 1.2 or 1.4 and it was only one of the 8v or 16v. The other version was solid as, if a little dull.

I never said avoid anything?????? Senior moment? 😂

The oil drinking issues were the 2.0 and maybe 1.8 was it not? Either way, it’s worth researching if you want a Vag petrol.

@SuperbTWM  Sorry, i was thrown by the Purple S and see it was @StevesTruckthat posted avoid the 1.2 petrol.

The Euro 5 1.8 & 2.0 TSI failings are according to the VW Group greatly exaggerated online.

They wish!   It is just they never own up to producing lemons.

Timing chains and tensioners is something VW Group fail to get a grip of, much as rubber door seals are beyond their ability to produce consistently good ones.

@cheezemonkhai1.4 TSI / TFSI 132-136 kW Twinchargers 2009-2014 Euro 5's are the ones with Oil Consumption issues and particularly CAVE engines from 2009-2012 while the were 'Engine of the year'.     A technological wonder regardless of a failure rate greater than 20%.

There was an old engine from the mk 1 fabia too, can’t for the life of me remember which one though.
