Replacing the coolant 1.6 engine

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Time to replace the coolant in my engine which is a 1.6 diesel.

They say use G12 I have some concentrated G13 anyone know what amount I would need to mix up? Should I go with a simple 50/50 Mix? Switch to G12 or use the G13?

I would typically dump the coolant from the lowest point on the radiator  and I would actually empty it out twice once for a flush. However this car has the plastic cover on the bottom anyone know a good place to dump the coolant from that's possible easier?

Thanks

Go with the G13. This is the latest version and what the garage put in my 1.6L car when they replaced the water pump.

The total capacity of the coolant is 8.6 litres and a minimum is that this be 40% concentrated G13. The back of your 5l container will show concentration against protection temperature.

This info is in your car handbook. If you need one, you can download it from the sticky up the post page.

I would remove the bottom radiator hose to dump the old coolant.

Yes direction on the back have attached a picture just in case.

Thats a bit of a bummer about the dropping from the rad! Means I need to take the plastic shield off.

G13. This is the latest version

Not any more.  G12Evo has replaced it I believe.

Yes, there is always a new version coming along! He has some G13 so no reason why that can't be used. The coolant tank is marked with top up with G12.

I would use already-mixed because if you live in a hard water area you don't want scale and impurities from tap water dumped around the engine and cooling system.

I was going to mix it with the following!!

Out of interest if I went pre mixed which brand would you use?

De-ionised water should be fine.

I recently had to top mine up, and went with Comma, because Halfords had it, and it is a respectable make. I don't think there is much difference - assuming it is from a brand that is respectable enough to have tested to the specification, I think the basic ingredient will be identical, and only the bittering additive and any additional lubricant could be different.
