My fabia 1.9SDI needs new engine, is the same of the Octavia?

Featured Replies

Hi!

i am having hard time looking for the same engine in my country, local repair shops insist it is the same engine of the Octavia 1.9sdi

but i have heard that the injection pump is different, some connectors too, is that true?

if the engine fits without any issue, all the same, will it keep the same fuel efficiency? will the computer and the little screen that shows me the fuel consumption endurance and all that, work?

my car smokes a lot (oil) but i am extremely happy with its efficiency, it gives me steady 2.7L - 3L for each 100km.

The engine a guy is selling me is from a 2006 1.9sdi Octavia, i will be within an hour to see it, what do you guys suggest me?

It is the same core engine, I can't comment on the ancillaries but you can swap them over from your engine if the connectors are different and use your existing pump. You'll have to re-use your engine mounts too since the Octavia is a larger Golf platform car.

The only Skoda to feature the ASY code engine is the Fabia, so I doubt it will be a drop-in replacement.

Seat Cordoba and Ibiza, and VW Polo are the other possible sources of an ASY-code engine, which may widen your searches a little, depending on what is available in your country.

Cordoba and Ibiza, hard to find here, Polo SDI little less common than the Fabia.

Where can i read the engine code in the engine itself?

Usually on the sticker on the upper cam-belt cover. (Example below; different code though, in that case BBY)

Engine code Fab.png

It won't be the same engine code obviously, but the core will be the same, the core is the block and head, all the other stuff that bolts onto it makes for a different code because it's for a different application.

Ops, mine is gone :-/

Would it worth to get that Octavia one and to replace the parts that differ with my Fabia engine parts?

Will it keep the same fuel economy?

Look, if your engine is burning oil then you only need a new core, all your ancillaries are fine, if you were to buy a reconditioned engine core you'd still have to move all your ancillaries over to the new engine.

Are you going to try and do this work yourself?

All Fabia 1.9SDI engines are code ASY, so that is what you have.

Except if there are indeed differences within head or block. For example BBY and BBZ have different cams, I believe.  Need to know the engine code of the Octavia engine in order to look for any such differences.

The problem is, here in this country,  i don't trust a bit in the quality of that kind of jobs.

Here is VERY common to open a engine and to assembly  back with out following any torque  specification,  people here swears the know better than the manufacturer. Thats why there is no way me to repair the engine despite EVERYBODY here (my country) keep telling me that.

If the engine is overheating, pam!, remove thermostat and if t continues overheating putt all the fan full speed, direct with the ignition key at all the time,  all suspension parts are tightened with the car raised and the insist that is right, if your car is old, no matter how pristine or low mileage is, if you take it to the oil shop, they will put a 50 grade oil without even telling you that, just because it is a rule of two here, if the car is old, need a thicker oil 😡😡🤦🏻‍♂️.

No matter  if it is a cheap mechanic  or a "professional"  that is what you get here,  you could have a luck and find a decent mechanic; maybe 2 of 1,000

Thats why i fear to rely in local mechanics  for that kind of job.

Most of the jobs are done by me.

You may find this job too challenging unless you have access to a fully equipped workshop.

You are getting phenomenal fuel consumption, between 78 and 87 mpg, I would be very loathe to fit another unknown engine and would tackle the oil consumption issue which given your fuel economy I think must be valve guides & seals and not piston/bore wear.

78 and 87? 🤣🤣

I get steady 96mpg at 85kmph  i do all my travels at that speed for that reason.

Yes, 2006

Why was the cam sprocket removed for crying out loud, that engine could be dead, you'd never know, it's been sat so long.

I suspect somebody was going to take the head off which suggests the head gasket is blown.

Also, i have a question and need your opinions.

Due the heavy oil burning, many have recommended me to use a sae 50 oil, the temperature here is 93 Fahrenheit most of the time.
