Sat Nav issue

I think all sat navs use lat and long for positioning it’s just that all other sat navs convert the post code you put in to the Lat and long without you knowing. It’s a bit like windows when you click an icon on the desktop it converts it to command line within windows to carry out the function.I wonder what the reaction would be if Microsoft updated windows and did away with the graphical user interface and went back to manually inputting command lines. Well done VW!

Someone commented that Google Maps or Apple Maps can be used. Correct, and very good too. Unfortunately I don't think they can be transferred to the digital dash. It also means fiddling with another device. My purpose in this vehicle was to keep things as simple as possible. No such luck. If I used the car nav on a daily basis I would change the car for something other than a VAG model Probably an X1 at about the same cost after specifying up the Skoda?

With regard to a comment from CJJE about using a phone data for internet radio. I use a TYP Link left over from use on my old Karoq. The data is good for roaming and reasonably priced. Unfortunately you have to shut off the e-sim.

Why couldn’t they just give us a sat nav that works, watched a you tube video of a Karoq review from an owner from a year or so ago. He demonstrated the sat nav, put in the postcode, up came three route options, he selected one and pressed start. Done.

I was so jealous, his was MIB2 I presume, stupid me I assumed the new updated system would be better than the system it replaced, should have remembered the old saying about never presume.

That's not correct, it doesn't mean fiddling with another device - you connect your iPhone or Android phone using a USB cable before driving off and then the phones navigation app appears on the cars infotainment screen and is controlled from the cars infotainment screen.

This is what I do on my Toyota Aygo - can't do it on my Octavia as it has a MIB1 Amundsen which doesn't support either CarPlay or Android Auto (but VAG have stopped issuing map updates so I'm stuck with 2020/21 maps for as long as I own the car it seems) but at least postcode entry works.

I spent a few years travelling in Europe with a motorhome.  All the campsites in Europe give you Lat/Long references and this is often used there and was easy to input into my TomTom.  VAG really seem to have dropped the postcode ball for us in the UK (and presumably the Netherlands which I understand also has a postcode system).  I continue to use a Tomtom in my Yeti as it has live traffic updates.  IMHO standalone units are generally better that the inbuilt ones (and can be used in hire cars abroad), or maybe its just that I am very familiar the way a Tomtom works.  You pay your money and take your choice!

My sat Nav seems to work 🤷🏼‍♂️ I put in the street name  1st pic and it comes up fine. I put in The post code for the 2nd pic and it comes up fine too. No off road coordinates are being shown.

I have just spent a full day trying to get the satnav to accept post codes! I even dropped in at a Skoda dealership and the nice salesman was astonished that he couldn't fix the problem saying his Skoda had a line under the QEWERTY keyboard with a post code icon and other clearer icons to make finding a destination easier. Having just read up on this forum as to other owners' comments I realise I have been wasting my time! The entire system is so unfriendly. I have reverted to good old googlemaps!

Hi all,

I have a KAROQ which I bought In 2019 new. I do not know what the MIB version Is but I have got the Columbus sat nav.

I am no tech or IT expert or anything but I find that my Columbus works great. You can find a destination using post codes, GPS coordinates

by address & by inputting addresses step by step. or by POis. Once you spend some time using practice runs & you get used to It It Is very easy.

Just read the owners manual & sit In your car to get the gist of things press every settings features that are sat nav related & ALL the necessary

things you need for navigation Is available. If one Is a bit scared of the technology  don't let it put you off, keep trying you'll get there eventually

when you input GPS coordinates which Is In degrees, minutes & seconds you can even input your own name for the destination. The only thing to

be aware of Is when setting the route choosing between the red, Amber, or green route. Pick the wrong one & It will take you ''All around the Houses''

before you get there. I find the RED route to be bad for this. The Amber route best so far, just pick the route which offers the shortest mileage helps.

For me the Columbus Is easy once you get the hang of It All you want is there. So don't be scared of It as It Is not as complicated as people think.

Hi Barbus,

Your 2019 Karoq uses the now-superseded MIB2 system - which many users find to be much better than the new MIB3 systems first fitted from the summer of 2020 in Karoqs.

The new software (fitted across all VAG cars) is less flexible in many ways, and relies on having an internet access to deliver its new features such as online map updates etc.

Hi CJJE (Chris),

Thanks for your reply. My Car also has a cd/dvd player which is good (for me). Looks like I have ''dodged the bullet'' by buying my car In the

right year (2019). Smart this & smart that & internet access & usage just another way as far as I'm concerned to extract even more of our

hard earned cash. If It's a successful winning formulae that works, why change It for the sake of It being for more money extracting technology.

Does the Columbus system  after 2019 still come with a cd/dvd player??

                             Cheers Bill.

Hi Bill,

I'm pretty sure the MIB3 Columbus is like my Amundsen in that there is no CD/DVD player anymore, and you can only play media files via Bluetooth or an USB-C drive. One improvement is that you can store 'Favourites' for the media files as well, giving quick access to a particular artist, genre, album or track.

On my previous Golf I used to use SD cards and data CDs to store media files, but for the Karoq I find a miniature USB-C drive works just as well.

Initially I was very annoyed that I couldn't update all the maps via a downloaded zip file and my PC, but am assured that the online updates keep the maps up to date whenever you drive into an updated region. This does require you to pay an annual subscription, but I've yet to find myself driving across fields on the map so it seems to be working. Again we've been promised that we'll be able to install map updates via the USB-C socket in the future.

I suspect it was designed for European postcodes, not the UK ones which for domestic locations can cover quite a wide area - which is why if you enter a postcode it locates to the central off-road position rather than an address.

Due to a lack of long-distance travelling I haven't yet had to try it out, but if you enter a full address will it take you to that house?

Chris

If you enter the address fully not just the postcode it's fine but a bit of a faff to do
