Superb faults and niggles - 3 year review

Featured Replies

When I first got my wife's Superb a few years ago I was so impressed with the car I asked the question "How did they do it?" So much car for such a good price, I liked it so much I sold my 5-Series bought one. Keep in mind that both our Superbs (1.4tsi ACT) where bought 1 and 2 years old for massive savings over new.

After having both cars for a few years I think the answer to the above question is despite a lot of VAG shared mechanical components, the Superb is noticeably, and understandably built to a budget in some areas.

The list of issues we have had with ours as follows:

Peeling chrome - DSG lever, door handles and air vent.

Sticky exterior door handles.

Driver's side electric window switch  becoming erratic.

Failed boot latch.

Cheap rusty brake disks.

Misaligned glove box

Error service: leave vehicle only when selector in position p. (Common across VAG)

Bar the DSG sensor error which is a bit concerning, all the other things are easily ignored or cheap to fix, and none of them have tainted the ownership experience. I still rate it as the best car I've ever owned for its breadth of abilities.

They are getting expensive new, but a 1 or 2 year old is still one of the most compelling family used car buys out there.  It's a car I would never hesitate to recommend, and when it comes to replacement time will be a very tough act to follow.

I'm at 5 years and 5 months

Peeling chrome - DSG lever, door handles and air vent.  - Not had

Sticky exterior door handles. - Had I lubricated myself then fine

Driver's side electric window switch  becoming erratic. - Not had

Failed boot latch. - Had fixed under warranty

Cheap rusty brake disks. - Well mine don't seem as bad as some ....

Misaligned glove box - Not had

Error service: leave vehicle only when selector in position p. (Common across VAG) - Fixed under warranty

Also had -

door on box under passenger seat broken - Fixed under warranty

Creaking suspension - Fixed under warranty

Marks on wheel center caps - Fixed under warranty

Active Cruise stopped working / needed a reset - Fixed under warranty

Chrome coming away from door surround - Fixed under warranty

Value for money is , well, Superb. My 2018 1.4Tsi ACT estate was just over £18k  brand new with a few options - choice of paint, fold flat front passenger seat, variable boot floor, heated washer nozzles, all season tyres, and spare wheel. First two services free.

Coming up to 3 yrs old in May it has been nearly flawless. A brake rattle, known issue, fixed under warranty.  It suffered the rusty fast wearing rear discs which have just been replacedf or £300 at 26k miles. No other issues. I can live with the early disc failure at £300 given the bargain price I paid.

Before buying I was looking at second hand Octavia estates. My local dealer was wanting £16k for a 3yr old 1.4Tsi example. Wouldn't budge on the price and was offering WBAC price on my trade in. So for £2k more I got a Superb rather than Octavia, new rather than 3 yrs old. Various options, and two free services.

irc.... That seems like an amazing price for a brand new Superb.

5 years and 3 days here :)

Rusty/pitted rear brake discs appeared on this years MOT as an advisory (5 years, 26k).

New advisories on this MOT - corroded front springs and misting from front damper (my guess is the latter is due to crashing through a pothole a year or so ago)

I've not experienced any of the OP's other niggles but have had:

Electric tailgate struts: replaced under warranty but getting noisy again

Diamond cut wheels blistering, particularly around the centre despite using non-acidic cleaners. That'll be a refurb job at some point

Wheel centre caps poor quality

Occasional TPM failure error which, once cleared, goes away for a year or so

Creaking suspension (DCC) - fixed under warranty after 3 attempts

I also think I'll be due a replacement battery in the next 12 months as I've had a few '12v low' warnings even after being on charge a few days previously.

Mine was about 38k retail (though I haggled hard and paid much less than that) so it's going to have to last me for the foreseeable future.

I had the chrome door surround fixed under warranty/recall/whatever

naff rear discs but since I’ve been driving in eco recently they’ve come back to life.

thats it really but since I’ve had the car for 4 years I’ve only done around 6k miles 😆, PCP deal is ending in July and will pay the balloon payment

Timing is everything .    Just took my 5 year old 16 plate  106K miles for pre MOT check and it is going to FAIL.

BIG Issue the EMU Light is  constantly on ORANGE

Dealer cannot eliminate the light with a range of POSSIBLE problems

Cost to replace the EMU £1,200 for the PART plus labour on top, but then do not know which of the errors showing still need doing or not estimate another £800 is all of them for parts.

What should I do?  Any sensible ideas much appreciated as got 4 days to MOT runs out

Oh to keep the list going issues with car in its entire history

Window chrome trims keep coming out - fixed once before

Passenger door handle repaired once now broken part and the handle is £200 due to the key sensor

EMU enough said light been on before and has gone off without any action

Rear washer failed - fixed and again not working well

Battery - yes this eventually went in February and I suspect the cause of the EMU light coming on when in car would stalled just after starting in the cold snap

Front shock absorber excess grease  / misting - another past  MOT advisory and not covered when under warranty

BUT that is it.   LOVE my car but can't afford £2K+ right now to repair.

Corroding centre caps seems to be a standard fit skoda item. Always strikes me as odd, surely the company logo is a top priority for any brand!

It was. Via DrivetheDeal. I had to fly to Norfolk from Glasgow to pick it up but worthit for the price.

I enjoyed it when the salesman from the local dealer called me to see if I was still interested in the Octavia and I told him I had got a better deal on a Superb.

The thing is the Octavia estate looked OK if he had been willing to drop £500 on the price or give me a better trade in  (on a car bought from and serviced by them) I may well have bought it.  I was slightly wary of buying via a broker but the comminiczation from the Norfolk dealer was great and my local dealer honoured the two free services and a warranty repair without blinking an eye.

Forgot to mention creaking suspension or chrome window trim, had those issues too.

Corroding centre caps, got 20 from Ali for peanuts, seem as good as the real thing.

I have had mine 5 years, 62000 miles and the only problems have been chrome window trim and corroding wheel centre caps.

Battery was replaced at 4 years 11 months under warranty (car had 5 year warranty).

It has been amazingly fault free.

Just ordered a new one, there are some very good deals to be had at the moment.

UNBELIVABLE.  made more so with HOZZ saying he had his battery replaced after 4 years 11 months under warranty. because I complained about my battery for a while before the 100,000 extended warranty.    The dealer put the battery on charge for me and said it was ok! that was November.  In February in the cold spell I stopped at a petrol station  and it would not start.  Got home with a jump start and had Halfords replace the battery . Chap said battery was 0%.  Car run smoothly since then but of course I had to pay as car now at 104,000 miles and out of warranty.

So today the saga of the Engine Management light.  I was given a quote for all the things needed including the defective unit for over £2K and of course it will be an MOT failure per new rules if not sorted.

Cannot afford the £2K right now and was suggested I consider trading in.  I decided to take car away and have a think with MOT ending MONDAY.

Decided to take to a local garage and persuaded them to run the codes , clear them and see what happens.  They did all that took the car for a 3 mile test drive and guess what?  Yup no Engine Management light .  I feel sick and this will be a divorce for me with the Skoda main dealer I am afraid. I have lost total trust.  Clearly they did not clear the errors and see what came back. The errors likely came up when the battery failed and the new battery would not raise the faults.  :@
