Space-Saver Wheel Sizes

Featured Replies

I’m getting a bit confused by space-saver wheel sizes, in particular the difference between the space-saver in the boot of my 2018 Octavia estate and the space-saver Skoda now offers as an option in the new, latest model Octavia estate. My space-save is a T125/70/R18 but the new Octavia space-saver option seems to be a 205/60/R16 which, unless I’m very much mistaken, is a full-size wheel, isn’t it? The latest Octavia brochure shows this wheel/tyre as being an option, along with a 125/70/R18 tyre, though this is shown as not available for the 1.5 TSI engine.

I want to know if I can take the space wheel out of my 2018 car and put it in the boot floor of a brand new Octavia estate I’m about to order as a replacement company car. I assume the T125/70/R18 I have will fit the new Octavia, should the need arise, but can anyone confirm? If so I’ll avoid ticking the box for a spare wheel on the new car options list and just retain the space-saver from my current 2018 car. I had to pay extra for it when taking my current car almost 3 years ago hence I want to keep it if it can be used on the new Octavia.

Pictures attached.

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Both sizes are shown as temporary spare wheels because they will (in most cases) not be the same size as the normal wheels on the car and you will be limited to 50mph for 50 miles when either is fitted. In most cases the normal wheel/tyre combination will not be 205/60 R16 so the 205/60 R16 is NOT a full size wheel.

The 125/70 R18 is shown as a space saver because (obviously) of the much narrower wheel and tyre, note that the 205/60 R16 is NOT called a space saver B)

Thanks for your reply. But the 205/60 R16 is actually a full size wheel, isn’t it? It’s just odd how on the Skoda configurator it’s stated as being a “Temporary Space Saver Spare Wheel” and yet it’s actually a full size spare, albeit the wheel is an inch smaller, and the tyre profile higher, and it’s clearly not an alloy wheel the same as the other four on the car. But it’s a proper wheel, so therefore can be driven on at normal speeds, unlike the T125/70 R18 in my current car.

Okay, that’s cleared it up. It was the description on the configurator that confused me. In which case, I’d always rather have a proper spare, and not a space-saver spare, so when ordering my new Octavia I’ll select the optional 205/60 R16 wheel.

Thanks. I felt I was asking something obvious but needed to put it out there to make sure I wasn’t on the wrong track!

No it's not a full size wheel, on the SE First Edition it's only available with 17" alloy wheels so even if it might have the same rolling circumference it won't have the same tread width and hence will not provide the same grip.

Since it's not the same size as the other 3 wheels then you cannot legally drive at normal speeds when it's fitted because the grip and handling will be adversely affected (three grippy wheels and one slightly iffy wheel is a recipe for a nasty moment).

Thanks for your comments. When I order my new Octavia I will select this larger space-saver spare, as it’s still preferable to the “skinny” space-saver in my 2018 Octavia, but I appreciate it’s still not a full spare so as you state the same speed restrictions will apply.

205/55R16 or 205/60R16 are full sizes wheels. Skoda do not refer to these sizes as space savers.

However, you will notice from the above link that these full size spares still have the same 50mph yellow warning stickers on them as space savers do. This is because if you are running different tyre sizes on the same axle, you mustn't exceed 50mph. Using different tyre sizes on the same axle is only to be used as a temporary get you home measure.

I thought that too until I carefully looked at the first post in this thread - there it shows three options for spare wheels, the first of which refers to the 205/60 R16 as a space-saver

It could be a debate that goes on and on...but as the Dragon's Den say...I'm out!

I thought this was going to be straightforward but far from it! I’ll just have to order the new Octavia with the larger spare & see what happens. Hopefully it’s all academic & I never need to use it anyway.

Thanks.

I have ordered a new Octavia vrs estate 200 Bhp .i have read about spare wheels on this thread.could I get a full size spare wheel and put it into the rear of the car and fit a floor cover into so it is not a uneven floor ?i know there is a big lip from boot lid to floor level and would this be big enough to house a full size wheel?

Hi, Joss. I can’t give you a definitive answer other than to say I would expect so, yes. The spare wheel I’ve opted for in my order is almost the size of a full-size wheel, it’s as near as damn it!

I’ve had an indication that my car should be with me in three weeks, so if it would help I can post a picture & send you any relevant measurements.

Regards.

Hi that would be a big help.mine will have 19 inch wheels and intend to drive around Spain.they don't take to kindly to odd size wheels on any car.cheers

Hi, Joss. My new Octavia estate has arrived a couple of days ago and I’m slowly getting to know it.

On the subject of the spare wheel as stated before mine has the larger spare which, if I’ve understood it correctly, is strictly speaking very marginally smaller than the wheels & tyres on the car. The spare is a 205/60 R16 and the four tyres on the car are 205/55 R17. Realistically I think there’s very little in it.

I said I’d share a couple of pictures so here you go. Certainly with the larger spare it pretty much fills the well, and the floor sits right on top. With my last car, a mark 3 model, I had the mini spare, and could fit various bits & pieces around the outside of the wheel between it and the walls of the tyre well in the boot floor, but aside from some thin gloves and emergency plastic bags I can’t fit much in between.

I hope this gives you some useful guidance but if I can help any more just let me know.

Cheers.

Hi many thanks,I would be grateful if you could send pictures and size of wheel.the problem with me is full size wheel is 19 inch.but willing to fit a space saver if I have to but would rather have a full size wheel.i do a lot of travelling and don't no the rules in other European countries regarding space saving wheel.i don't trust thesegel filling things when getting a puncture.you would think the cost of cars you would have a full size spare wheel, like years ago.

Octavia MK4 spare wheel foam and jack/tools (but without spare wheel) OEM part number 5E3093860
You should be able to order this spare wheel foam and jack/tools from any Skoda dealer using the OEM part number 5E3093860

https://eshop.skoda-auto.cz/cs_CZ/sada-pro-vymenu-rezervniho-kola/p/5E3093860

mytyres list a 6.5Jx16 ET46 steel rim for the Octavia MK4. This is the Skoda approved 16" size. It just needs a 205/60R16 tyre added, which mytyres can also supply and fit to this rim.

https://www.mytyres.co.uk/rims/details?vehicleId=1275564879859684464&rimCode=ALCAR6667

The 205/60R16 tyre size has the same outside diameter as the other standard Octavia MK4 tyre sizes, which include 205/55R17, 225/45R18, 225/40R19.

16" rims won't fit over the front brake calipers if you have those massive 340mm front brake discs, such as some VRS models. 340mm front brake disc models will need at least 17" rims.

"skoda eshop cz" list a 125/70R18 spare saver that could also be used.

You should be able to order this space saver from any Skoda dealer using the OEM part number 5E3601011B
