Glow plug light flashing

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2001 plate Octavia T.D.I. Yesterday for no apparant reason the yellow glow plug indicator light ( on dash clocks) started to flash aprox 30 seconds after starting the car and continues to do so when driving. Does anyone have previous experience of this problem and advice on how to correct it please..?

Thanks,

Isn't that the signal to tell you that you've got a brake light not working? Might be worth checking them.

Hi, Thanks for that advice. The light in question is yellow and looks like a coil.. so i`m presuming its the glow plug indicator.I may be wrong so i`ll check the handbook.

Thanks again.

It is the glow plug light, but when the brake light switch on the brake pedal fails it flashes for some reason, you probably haven't got any brake lights!!

Yep, sounds like the rear brake lights have gone. I have seen this on my old Octy, and on 2 of my old VW vans.

NB..my instances have always been blown brake light bulbs..

The glow plug light doubles as an engine management light, thats why it flashes when the switch fails.

Thanks for your advice everyone. Ive checked the brake lights and Youre right ,theyre off. The switch seems to be faulty..... now they are stuck ON so ive removed the switch.. Does anyone know if this is a dealer only part and price please.?

Thanks again to all as this has saved loads of time from looking at the wrong end of the car for fault.

Does that glowplug light go off it a brake bulb has blown too?

Dealer only as far as I know (but Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda will stock it) price is around £8 and the part number is 1J0 945 511 F

Does that glowplug light go off it a brake bulb has blown too?

Yes

Hmmm, just tried it by taking the brake light bulb out and everything is as normal.

Dont know about Octy or Fabia, but when a brake light goes in the Superb you get the bulb faliure warning light on, the coil light only comes on if the switch fails.

Not all Fabias have bulb failure lights though.

Does that glowplug light go off it a brake bulb has blown too?

My '02 Octavia TDI didn't give me any dashboard indication when a brake light bulb failed...

Hi ... Ive got a replacement switch from the dealer and read the Link regarding "brake switch installation" Thanks. The dealer say`s that it must be offered up to the pedal as per b.s.i instructions and then turned 3 clicks to secure. is this correct ? as it only seems to want to go..2 clicks and the brake lights still don`t work. Sorry guys it seems to be a bit of a pain in the butt kind of job:confused:

And THIS is exactly what the internet & forums is all about

Scenario - Flashing glow-plug light last night on a 1/2 hour journey. No idea why, never seen before, wife 'n' kids going on a 3 hour cross-country trip tomorrow. Is the engine going to fail ? How soon can a Skoda dealer deal with it ? The journey can't be avoided ! General dismay around the house yesterday evening.

This morning - type "fabia coil light flashing" into google and here I am with something that's reassured us the car is going to be fine and needs a fiarly simple fix.

Cheers Guys.

Hi,

My fuel sensor has been changed today and for some reason the glow plug indicator is flashing. My brakes seems to be fine, what is the cause

Brake light switch

Are the lights working?

Sarah

My '02 Octavia TDI didn't give me any dashboard indication when a brake light bulb failed...

My 2001 TDi Elegance did not give any indication on the dash that one of the brake lights has failed, and it has had several opportunities to do so.

The glow plug light will NOT flash if 1 bulb is blown.

It MIGHT flash if All brake light bulbs go

It WILL flash if a fault is logged for the brake light switch

On some models when both left and right brake light bulbs fail the centre brake light can illuminate 1 LED at either end even when the brake isn't applied.

How do you access the switch to replace?

Behind the brake pedal

Thought of adding this:

I had glow plugs warning indicating that problem with Brake light switch. I removed the switch behind the brake pedal and found the contacts were either ON completely of OFF completely. Slightly brought them back to normal position when the plunger is pulled and rectified the problem. so far more than a 1yr over, the same switch is working normal.

I'm having the same problem.. i'v checked the brakes, they are working fine.

Last night, the battery went dead, so i started it with a push... since then the glow plug light (yellow coil light) is flashing and engine management light is on solid.

The following morning i started the car, it started straight away. read these forums, checked the break bulbs, break switch all seems to be working. but lights are still flashing.

can i check anything else b4 i take it to get it checked by a computer diagnostic.

or could it be the computer needs to be reset?

edit: i drive a octavia mk1 07 plate. 19 tdi classic.

thx
