Extended MAF Warranty

Featured Replies

I don't know if this will apply to you 'sodians....but.....

I received a letter today from VAG saying they are extending the warranty on the mass air sensors from the 5/50 to 7yr /70,000 miles. The letter appeared to indicate that there were a wide range of VW models covered under the extension.

Also, they will reimburse for repairs previously made.

The exension will cover the 1.8 turbo in my New Beetle.

Regards! :mw:

I wasn't aware that the MAF was problematical, unlike the coil packs. Is the coil pack recall complete in the States now or is it still an issue?

Right now the coil pack issue is very quiet here in the States. I'd guess that all are now replaced. The big issue now is the brake light switch recall that started a couple - three weeks ago.

I'll give VWoA a tip of the chapeux for being more proactive in these matters. Back in 2001 when we bought our first VW (after owning only Japanese cars since 1976!!) I got the impression that VW was not all that interested in "doing the right stuff" and keeping the customer happy.

:rainbow:

Can you explain the brake light switch recall? I think I may have some experience of this.

Assuming it's the same problem as the VW Golf - IIRC it's basically the 00/01 models - the sensor that activates the brake lights packs in prematurely :)

Rich,

I got a letter from VOA about 6 weeks ago indicating that the brake light switches on certain models can fail. Sorry, Dude, I don't have the letter in front of me and I'll have to look up the details and model coverage.

The jist of it was some switches are failing. The brake lights won't work with a failed switch. No brake lights are a safety issue. Several rear enders have occured as a result. Ergo, VW will check it and replace it for free if its broken.

I've not taken Ziggy in for the repair yet but I DO check every time I back up for the B-lights.

(I'd think that the cruise control would not shut down as well. Its wired to the brake switch and turns off when touching the brakes. Not having it disconnect... Now that would be really interesting!!!! No brake lights are one thing... but zipping along, hitting the brakes and having the cruise control carry on could give you an adrenaline rush, hair prickles and a strained spincter. Not sure I'd be all that quick remembering where the off switch is located. Ahhh, I think I've talked myself into getting it fixed quicker...)

Would be more of a problem on an auto, but in a manual a quick dip of the clutch would do the trick ;)

(edit: 1,500th post. Whoohooo!)

A thrill indeed but if I wanted that sort of kick I'd buy a Ford Explorer! :(

The reason I asked about the brake switch was that my wifes Polo went in for a service last week, prior to this she'd experienced a couple of sudden drops in power (even 80mph to 20mph on the motorway before it picked up again), when we mentioned this at the dealers they diagnosed and changed a faulty brake (light?) switch. I personally couldn't see the connection between a drop in power and a switch but it hasn't done it since. The mysteries of these new fangled 'automobiles'....

there is a lot of problems with maf recently with both petrol and diesel. they usally cause a big decrease in performance and in some cases mainly 1.8 lack the enige of fuel so watch out for it.
