Workshop error leave in position P gear selector

Featured Replies

Has anybody had this error on their Superb?

It seems to happen on Fabias and Octavias according to this forum but I haven't seen it mentioned on Superbs.

I only asked because I have had the error twice in the last month but then it cleared itself after 10 minutes.

It would appear to be a microswitch problem in the gear selector but whether it needs just a new microswitch or a whole gear selector is open to question.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Common problem on here, try a search.

The fix is either a whole new gear selector assembly or a new micro switch modification. Dealers are aware of it and there is apparently a technical bulletin about it

Yes I have done the search but it is not clear whether you can just replace the microswitch on a Superb or whether it has to be the whole gear selector assembly.

Pretty sure it can be done but not sure if it’s a diy thing or not.

if you have a warranty then I’d suggest try a dealer as it should be covered. If not at least speak to them for an idea of prices

if recently out of warranty ask about goodwill. Going rate seems to be you pay  50% labour and skida has paid parts and other 50%.

They can only say 'no'.

Unfortunately Skoda will not pay anything towards it (car is 5 years 1 month old although it had a 5 year warranty) and quote from dealer is £724 to replace gear selector so have decided not to do anything for the moment as the fault always clears after driving 10 minutes.

Does anyone know if the fault causes any problems other than an annoying message?

Theres a big old discussion about this on the Octavia forum, and someones just posted showing they've managed to replace the sensor that causes this on a superb.

I had a word with my mechanic about this and apparently it doesn't cause any deeper issues other than the annoying message, as the sensor that

causes it isn't the main one the gearbox uses to identify the gear position, it's more of a secondary back up.

I've decided to just put up with it for the effort and cost involved.

Someone said in the other discussion if you move the gear lever between park and drive a few times before you set off it helps clear the sensor.

I've been doing that for a couple of week now and the warning hasn't come back since, so thats worth a try!
