‘Characteristics’ of my Octavia

Featured Replies

Yes I appreciate there are lots of posts already about the ‘fun’ features of the MK IV Octavia but I wanted to add my own,

Car was built 2nd week of January 2021, it’s an 1.5 TSI 150 Se Tech estate manual, and here is a list of things that grind my gears about it.

Engine surges on first start / cold start and kangaroos up the road.

noisy transmission whine

noisy bearing on a belt tensioner

drivers seat reclines on its own

speakers crackle loudly with parking sensors make sound.

ACC stops working randomly

Park assist stops working randomly

reverse can be hard to engage

rear tail lights flicker badly when engine is running, turn engine off and they are fine.

LANE ASSIST - need I say any more.

the way you have to press and enter menus to change the MFD / trip display information.

Engine feels like it’s being limited on power at times, some days it goes like a train, other times it feels like it has no power, for example when you floor it in 3rd gear.

being logged out of the drivers profile and having to input my email address and password once / twice a week.

brake pedal clunks the first time you press it after the handbrake disengages.

It has the worst turning circle of any car I have ever owned.

These are just a few things that I have come across in the 6 weeks of ownership so far. I am sure there are more things to come.

Whilst I can go at length about the other stuff, I share the issue regarding loss of power.  Did a 450 mile round trip today and the engine just feels flat and I have no confidence in pulling out to overtake.  The car does the same power surging and also misfiring/jerking at 30 mph in third or fourth even when warm.

I had a courtesy car for ten days with the same 1.5 engine and it was night and day.  I enjoyed driving this one.   So, mine is going to be looked at on the 7th April, though I suspect I’ll get the “nothing wrong, it drives normally” from the dealer.  Which point I’ll seriously consider moving the car on.  I can handle most of the glitches of the software, but not the basic driveability.

sad really, as it was one of the few cars that met my practicality needs...

The gift that keeps on giving, good to see Skoda working so hard to regain the reputation that they once had :D

All the old jokes will be back before you know it.

Thanks for the feedback.
I’m surprised and a bit concerned that this is on a recently built car, as predominantly the issues you have mentioned afflicted early build cars.
Maybe lessons haven’t been learnt or maybe older parts are still working there way through the production line.
My wife had the Karoq Edition with 1.5tsi engine. It was a cracking engine once you got used to it. It also “roared” into life on a cold start but I took that as a characteristic of the engine, which is a very complex piece of engineering.
Once I realised that you had to work the engine to get the best out of it, keep in a higher rev range to have the torque on tap, it was a really entertaining car to drive.
Hope you manage to resolve / address your early findings. ✌🏼👍🏼

@vedubber can you make a picture of your system information?
HW version, SW version, etc.

vedubber, why haven't you rejected the car? There seems to be enough there - engine surge, AC faults,  park assist, tail light flicker, transmission whine,  (but at high revs that's a characteristic of the 1.5 engine, most of the torque is lower down the rev range anyway) etc.

But a lot you could have checked before getting it, like the lane assist (common on most new cars now),  and getting in to screen menus (most car reviews complain about this across every make)

Turning circle - what have you been driving? Figures from comparable size cars - Octavia 3, 10.6m, Octavia 4, 10m, Ford Focus, 10.7m

VW Golf, 10m, Mercedes A Class, 11m, Mercedes C Class 11m, BMW 3 Series, 11m.  And the last two have north-south engines so have more room for wheel angle.

But seriously, the engine, seat and the numerous intermittent electrical faults are serious enough to warrant a fight with the dealer.

I haven’t had the opportunity to book it in with any local dealer to have a look at the issues. Secondly it’s not my car, it’s lease,

the turning circle listed on a MK 4 estate 1.5 is 11.1 meters.
my previous car was an Arona with 10m listed as the turning circle.

According to the SEAT website, it's 10.6m for the Arona.

I took my Octavia figure from  Parker's.  I can't see turning circle anywhere on the Skoda website, nor in the downloadable brochure,  nor does the driver's handbook for the Octavia 4 (all 241 pages of it) mention turning circle.  However, AutoExpress gives the Octavia 4 hatch as needing 10.4m.  I stand corrected. Okay, 0.4.m more than I thought, but not London bus figures. And I can't see the estate needing another 70 cms, especially with the hatch and estate being the same length.

Isn't Arona also a bit shorter car than Octavia?

Screen grab off my car config for my ordered estate, suggests turning circle is 11.1m:

Good spot there, Aarond!

Seems Skoda can't measure their lengths properly either.  The car grows when it leaves the configurator and reaches the driver's handbook.

No idea then, it might be an 11.1m turning circle or it might not be! Odd that the measurements are different, maybe because vRS and nonvRS?

Either way, this is a thread hijack now: hopefully you get your issues sorted @vedubber

Nope, same length for all.  There was (were?)  a few mm of difference for the Mk 3 vRS.

Curioser and curioser.

End of hijack!

Car is booked In with the dealer in a few weeks to have all the issues sorted. After speaking to the service technician he acknowledged most of the issues are know and that there are updates / TPIs to fix. Let’s see what happens.

You must of never drove a Volvo v60.the turning circle is 11.4 metres and skoda is 10.4.that is one of the reasons am going for a skoda.
