ALG and Lane Assist

Featured Replies

Hi I have a 2019 Karoq Edition and have a problem with the ALG and/or Lane assist. The car was fitted with a new camera last year when it packed up. I can now drive on a dual carriageway and the car will stay in between the lane markings, although it weaves from one side to the other. I assume this is the adaptive lane guidance working? I can drive across the white lane marking on a dual carriageway at 60 mph, no indicators, and the is no corrective feedback to the steering wheel? Is the the Lane Assist not working?  The car was recently serviced and the main dealer said it was all working as it should. I questioned this as when the car was new I spent time on fast country roads where you could cut the bends a bit and there was a vibration from the steering wheel on crossing the white lane markings. I was invited to the garage to speak with the Master Technician who was unable to explain the difference between ALG and Lane Assist. The garage have now spoken with Skoda UK who, I am told, asked them to compare it to a same model car of the same age and see if there is any difference in the assist systems. The service advisor said 'No similar cars in stock so you will have to wait'  Not very happy with the main dealer !!

I am correct the adaptive lane guidance works, although it seems it may need fine tuning?

I am correct that the Lane assist is not working, no corrective feedback to steering wheel.?

Thanks in advance

John

Not sure this will help but I think you only get resistance if it shows as green recognise that it is in a lane. If lane symbol shows orange it can not see road marking. So if no resistance and green lane symbol I would say its not working as expected.

Should be dead easy to prove by dealer if you are near a motorway or decent dual carriage way with clear white lane marking.

With mine it does not weave when locked into a lane but will keep middle even when lanes curve.

Sounds like you have problems?

Thanks for your reply. The green lane symbols are lit and no steering wheel  'wobble' as I cross lane markings (No indicators) The ALG lets me weave from inside of lane to outside of lane so it seems this does need some adjustment. No motorways in Norfolk but a couple of good A roads.

What settings are showing on the infotainment under Driver Assistance Settings? Are there two options (ALG and LA) or just the one? Sounds like neither (if you have both) are on - ALG as I understand it is meant to keep you in a lane (not meandering from side to side) whilst LA would vibrate the steering wheel if you cross a lane marking without indicating. Pic (from a post on this forum albeit for a Superb) shows older options settings screen with ALG and newer without it. Hope this helps. 1359723821_2016SkodaSettingsPic.thumb.jpg.f5b657c9def756a3b955484cbf0197de.jpg.eeff448d5579cd787a91a494c3d70e12.jpg618987289_2019SkodaSettingsPic.thumb.jpg.f05b5e146fb92e165449668a8b597566.jpg.ea09bff1b0a1be319fcf2a2c31366b2d.jpg

Hi VRT24, thanks for your reply, both lane assist and adaptive lane guidance are shown in the infotainment system and both are ticked on. It makes me think that when the camera was replaced a year ago it was not properly calibrated. Due to the lockdown I hardly drove for most of the last year. My ALG ping pongs me from one side of the lane to the other.

Thanks

Is there there anyone who has Lane Assist and Adaptive Lane Guidance that can confirm that if I am driving at over 50 mph on a dual carriageway if I cross the lane markings with no indicator I should get a steering wheel vibration/correction? My car was at the main dealers for 5 days and although the ALG seems to hold centre lane much better I get no steering wheel feedback if I cross the lane markings. Anyone help? Phoning the Service Manager again today and just want to check I have it right.

Thanks

John

I am pretty certain this is the case although I have not really done any serious driving this last year.

When I first got the car I was surprised by the action, it was very noticeable and the Salesman talked about turning it off.

I do remember seeing an article from road safety saying that VWG implementation of safety features was poor as too obtrusive so perhaps they have toned it down?

MJ1 Thanks for your reply. The main dealers Master Technician just doesn't accept that I should get a feedback to the steering wheel. The camera was replaced a while back, not driven much due to covid, so it probably stems from that.

Thanks

John

See if you can have a test drive in something similar, I guess you might have tried that with them already. I  clearly remember the salesman when I picked up the car saying that you had to fight the lane assistance and I was a bit huh! But he was right it makes you aware if your not expecting the resistance.

My car will only change lane if you deliberately force it too. It’s quite obvious if it is working or not.

It will happily follow a lane, more or less in the centre and follow a lane around a bend by itself if you loosely hold the steering wheel. Your,s can’t be working correctly

Hi kenfowler3966 mine will now stay in lane if you loosely hold the steering wheel. It will not allow you to cross the lane marking. If I slowly steer across the lane markings on a dual carriage way there is no feedback/vibration to the steering wheel which I am sure it did before the new camera was fitted. The garage told me today that they cannot fit/calibrate the camera themselves it has to go to the local VW garage. Hopefully I am going in on Monday to drive another Karoq so the service manager/technician can see the difference.

Thanks

Hi I am still no further forward with this, spent 4 hours at Robinsons in Norwich, who still say nothing wrong !!!!. Spoke with the salesman who sold me the car who agreed that lane assist should give steering wheel feedback if you cross lane markings when its active and you don't indicate. Service department still not interested.  BUT

When I got home I sat in the vehicle and switched it off then switched it back on and very briefly Lane Assist deactivated flashed up on the maxi dot screen. I checked the main menu and Lane assist and adaptive lane guidance are shown as on.

What can cause this to happen, anyone any ideas?

Just about given up on this, the main dealer says the message 'Lane Assist Deactivated' is normal and nothing to worry about? Still no steering wheel feedback whatsoever from the lane assist but the main dealer will not accept its faulty. See the video.

Really sorry to read this, I  can confirm after a longer journey I Do get strong feedback from steering wheel.

Can you use another dealership to check the car?

Have you escalated directly with Skoda if it is still in Warranty?

What a sorry state of affairs.

Skoda UK have advised to visit another main dealer, booked in for the 8/6/21. MJ1 do you get the same error message, shown in the video, in the maxidot screen when you start up. The main dealer I have been going to say they checked another Karoq and that was the same, its just the system starting ??

Thanks

John

We don't get such a message flash up. You say that lane assist has its box ticked on the infotainment screen, but is it also ticked in the maxidot display as well? I think I read somewhere that there was a software glitch that caused a system to not work right and an indicator was differing status indications between infotainment and maxidot. Anyway glad you are getting it to another dealer so that hopefully they can confirm that you are not getting the steering wheel resistance/vibration and, more importantly, fix it!

Hi VRT24 yes its on in both maxidot and infotainment. The message in the video only seems to flash up when the maxidot is on the assist setting?

Thanks

John

When driving along and the maxidot shows the lanes, do they change colour as you veer out of lane? If not, then either the camera isn't working or it's not been fitted correctly and isn't passing messages to the steering wheel vibration gizmo and the maxidot. Don't think there is much more you can do, however, except wait until it goes to the second dealer. I'd try and get the service manager to agree to going out with you so you can show them the fault otherwise you could end up with the same response as the original dealer. Also highlight that Skoda UK have asked for it to go to the second dealer.

Good luck.

Hi VRT yes the lane indicators change colours, orange when they are detected and white when not. It had a new camera fitted on its first service and I am not sure if its worked since ( No motorway driving for a bit)

Sounds like it's fully functional apart from the 'vibration/resistance' through the steering wheel. If Skoda UK say your car should do that, then the dealers that did the new camera install have got it wrong somewhere. Hopefully it may be something really simple like tha multi-pin connector for the wiring harness on the camera needs 'wiggling'. I had a Vectra that started running roughly - company car and dealers replaced just about every engine sensor going 'cos that's what the plug in diagnostic told them to do' but to no avail. It went in for its last service just before I got a new company car and I said it was still running 'rough'. When I collected it the lady mechanic came out to see me and advised that they couldn't find a fault. However she had undone and re-connected all the engine management sensors in case that cured it. Blow me, the drive home was like having a new car again! Shame it went back to fleet auction a week or two later. Regrettably most dealers workshops are driven by plug in diagnostics and thus simple things like iffy connections are not considered - besides they can bill more to replace what they believe is a faulty sensor, rather than actually think for themselves and try a more appropriate solution.

WHAT !!!  Just had a call from the second main dealer, my car goes into them next Tuesday. They tell me that if the lane assist problem is caused by the camera, it was replaced by the first dealer 14 months ago, they would have to charge me as it would not be covered by warranty. Basically dealer 1 replaces camera Feb 2000, lane assist does not work and they cannot fix it. Skoda UK say take it elsewhere. Dealer 2 now saying they cannot replace camera, if its faulty, on warranty and I would have to pay. E mailed Skoda UK and awaiting a reply.

John

The Manufacturers Warranty is 3 years, if a Warranty replaced part fails then it is covered to the end the Manufacturers Warranty.

If replaced now then that is as long as it is covered to.   3 years from the cars First Registration in the UK.

Good luck you couldn't make this up and please keep us informed,  would be interested to know what this would cost to replace.

If not covered by warranty i would think you might have a small claims case to recover your money for the 2nd dealer to fix it. It depends on getting confirmation from 2nd dealer that the first did not install correctly. If they provide evidence it would be an open and shut case imo.

Aggro but better to get it fixed then reclaim the money via small claims depends of course how much is the cost.
