Dashcam powered from rain sensor

Recommended Posts

I've got a Nextbase 522 with rear camera.

I installed the rear camera myself but got Halfords to do the main unit which is hard wired to the fusebox.

It cost me £35 for the fitting, including the kit and 30 mins of my time.

It's a really neat job and I'm v.happy with the result.

If I'd have not done the rear camera already, I think they wanted another 15 quid to do that.

Well worth it in my opinion!

Hi,

Anyone in here has experience with this kit from Aliexpress?

It seems like an elegant solution. Powered from rain sensor.
Only info I found is in Czech Skoda forum https://forum.skodahome.cz/topic/140959-kamera-do-superba-iii/page/5/#comments

What are your thoughts? Thanks

Looks a neat setup. Cant find many reviews, but the czech reviews make it look a neat install. Tempted.

Doesn't appear to do. Though saying that, I've just got a Pixel 5 and Android Auto is behaving a bit erratically (seems to freeze now and again and have to unplug the phone).

Other than that, no other issues!

I really do think that it's the phone and not the car.

The phone does other daft stuff like continuing to ring when you attempt to answer it (when nowhere near the car), but stupidly you have to unlock it first before answering the call. A real PIA.

The comments made about the dash cam are my observations, but if you want to go down the route of AliExpress, you must do what you feel is correct with the information gleaned.

Cheers

I’ve got a nextbase and wired it in myself. The cable ticks neatly under the trim and just had to be careful routing the cable behind the airbag on the a pillar. The nextbase cameras come with a clever fuse jumper that plugs into a fuse position and piggy backs the power. Original fuse then reinstalls in the jumper. Just have to find something that is switched power.

Just been trying to install my new NextBase today and had issues, so had to back it out.  I'm trying the piggy-backed 10A fuse and the screw at the bottom left of the glove compartment as ground but not getting power - annoyingly though, it's not that simple, as I did have it working once, but had to redo things, although what I needed to do was allow a little more of the cable to the camera as I'd not left enough for where I was positioning the camera further down than I anticipated.  Anyway, despite not (as far as I can recall) shifting the fuse & ground, it didn't work after that, specifically no power to the Nextbase 'black box' (converts 12v to 5V & has an LED to show power. Odd...

The piggy-back appears to be working, as the car detects if the piggy-back & fuse it removed and returned, but as I don't have a meter, I wasn't able to verify the voltages.  On the other hand, Amazon should be delivering one tomorrow, so I wondered if anyone has pointers for where I might best locate a ground/chassis point round there to verify the points I was trying?

I'm pretty sure that my problem turned out to be the Superb switching off that particular assistance during testing, as while driving over the w/e, I saw something off in the assistance menu and re-enabled it, then found I had power when able to test this eve, so now done.  Front working fine - leaving the rear cam till I've watched a few more videos, i think!

Can I ask what position you plugged your fuse into? Mine seems to be permanent on rather than switched on and I don't want to run down the battery. Tried mine in rear window heater but still seems always on!

Matt page 143 of your handbook, look at your fuses overview picture, i put mine into number 48 it says its not used it switches on when engine is on and off when its not, but when i checked my battery a few days ago it was reading 12.3v which is not to good to be honest i might take it to my local battery specialist tomorrow to do a proper test on it, the car is only a year old the batteries in these are sh***t really mine is a EFB.

Mine is position 48. Tested with multi meter and the fact dash cam turns on and off with ignition proves it is switched too. Apparently it is for blind spot detection. Which I don’t have. But there’s a 2a fuse in the hole so who knows. The way the adaptor with the kit works limits you to positions due to the big fuses. Fits quite nicely in this position.
