Confusion over official / real MPG of the 1.5 TSI engine

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm considering a Karoq 1.5 TSI DGS engine but having trouble getting comparable mpg info.

On Autotrader, a lot of these cars (new) are listed as 50.5 mpg combined, e.g. this link (see Running Costs). And Honest John lists the official mpg of this engine as 50.4 as well, see here. However if I build this car on the Skoda configurator, it shows me 42.9 mpg combined, and the real world Honest John reviews say real value of 39.4 mpg. I can also find apparently identical models on Autotrader (e.g. here) listing 40.4 mpg.

I know mpg depends on type of driving and some additional extras, but I just want to find a number I can compare with some other cars, and can't am confused by the disagreement in even the official figures, so I want to check there hasn't been an engine upgrade I'm not aware of.

Thank you

Before I bought mine (2.0 TDi 4x4 DSG) the Skoda configurator showed mid 30s mpg ISTR, I’m presently averaging 52mpg (real world).  Glad I ignored those numbers.

Could be one of two problems, or both.

Many 3rd party websites, even used car adverts from the dealers, are still using the old system ( NEDC ) to calculate average MPG. Last year manufacturers were compelled to calculate and publish their figures based on a new testing cycle called WLTP. Sounds very much like you're comparing figures from the two different tests. The WLTP figues are more accurate.

Secondly you have a whole manner of WLTP figures. People should be quoting the overall average combined figure, but some 3rd parties are lazy and jusy quote the highest figure they can find.

To compare figures with any accuracy, I find the best sources to use are the manufacturers claimed average combined figure under WLTP testing but by far the best is Honest John's REAL MPG data which is calculated on real-world users experience. I'm not sure what algorithms they use to dismiss the unrealistic figures but their quoted figures have almost always been spot on for every car I've owned.  That HJ figure you've quoted for my 1.5DSG is approx what my car returns throughout the year.  As you correctly state, it obviously depends on how you drive and in what conditions you drive the car.

This may help you understand better:

1.5 tsi dsg.

Since lockdown, all short rural journeys (2-5 miles,) I've been getting 32 to 35 mpg. Prior to lockdown it was up around 39mpg .The only difference is that prior there were the occasional 50 mile journeys.

I have occasionally got to the mid 40s on longer journeys but have never got 50mpg.

I'm a low mileage driver, since buying the car ( Christmas 2018) I've only done just over 11,000 miles and I'm scoring 97 to 99 on Connect Lite App driving style rated "Gentle".

I see you have already looked at Honest John 'Real MPG'. https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/skoda/karoq-2017 that mirrors my experience.

Skodas when delivered from the factory are filled with 0w-20 grade oil to VW508 spec. This is super thin eco oil that optimises fuel consumption and emissions.

When you have your car serviced at a Skoda dealer, it is quite likely it will be refilled with 5w-30 grade oil to VW 504 spec. Or if you are on or switched to fixed servicing regime and have a dealer like mine it will be refilled with 5w-40 or maybe even 10w-40 grade to VW502. Reason they give me is the Skoda service computer printout tells them to use VW502 oil  (real reason is it saves them £5 or so)

The result is my car now returns around 5% less mpg on long runs and even less on short runs (upper 30's opposed to upper 40's)

On both services (bought as a plan with new car), so far, my dealer ignored verbal and written instructions from me regarding oil grade to use.

The 1.5tsi engine is specifically designed to use vw 508 oil, so make sure the dealer uses that when its serviced, if you want best fuel economy.

Re above. I omitted to mention that I run with the aircon permanently on.

This was mine from today. Some inner city driving and some duel carriage way.  IMG_20210330_143746.thumb.jpg.b5fbaaccb296ea39080b86a4e083259d.jpgMpg is definitely less than I expected but I've been told it will improve after a while. (I have my doubts to this being true 😂

If you weren't fighting on the dual carriageway, it might improve a bit.  ;)     I'd be happy with those sort of  figures from a  mid sized petrol SUV.  I can get the average on my wife's 190 TDI Karoq down to less than that fairly easily.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I never even noticed en garde 😜

You might find the above of interest.
