A British adventurer plans to drive an EV truck from Pole to Pole

Featured Replies

He better check on zapmap or equivalent for charging points in the Antarctic before setting off ;)

Change to winter tyres too , maybe take a blanket or two and a thermos flask ...:giggle:

I hope he's not going to travel in a support convoy of fossil powered trucks with diesel generators to recharge him.

He says today when speaking to the media that the arrangements for charging will be revealed later as will the vehicle.

Quite possibly solar charging & wind turbine charging.

Then maybe strategically placed Mobile Units for charging where there were none before as Audi did when filming how to travel through several countries in 24 hours. (Using facilities those not with Audi had no access to.

On the radio today they kept calling it an Electric Car even though it seems that it will be a Pick-Up truck.

Saying it would need extended arches to get appropriate tyres fitted.....

Arctic Trucks certainly have plenty of experience of preparing suitable vehicles for such environments.

From last year.

How's he going to "drive an EV truck from Pole to Pole" when there is no direct land bridge connecting the two Poles?

Are they going to attach the EV truck to a boat (of some kind) powered from the EV truck (either directly from the batteries or driven from the wheels via rollers)?

If they cross the water sections powered by anything other than the EV truck then they haven't driven "an EV truck from Pole to Pole" as advertised IMHO.

Many that cycle or walk around the world need to get on some form of boat.   Human powered around the world would be some challenge.

Jenny Grahame who has the record for the 'Fastest Woman to Cycle Round the World' or 'Woman who cycled around the world fastest' needed to do at least 18,000 miles, but with ferries and flights had to exceed 24,900 miles.

I guess he won't be doing rapid charges due to incompatibility.

There was a guy transported his very early Model 3 to UK as first stop in his Euro trip. He couldn't get any charging speed faster than 11kW using the onboard AC charger. None of UK supercharger and rapid chargers worked.

@wyx087What will the incompatibility be between since we do not know what he will be driving?

Indeed, we don’t know the route.

But we know different regions have different rapid standards:

- North America: Type 1 CCS

- Europe: Type 2 CCS

- China: GB-something

- Japan: Chademo

More important for this trip, I’ve no idea on Africa or South America standards, but the infrastructure is unlikely to be as well built out.

But as long as there is civilisation with electricity, all EV can get a charge anywhere because the onboard charger is globally compatible. Just not rapid enough to cover as much ground as ICE cars.

From what I know about certain tv wildlife nature adventurers/experts, what you see on documentaries will be far from the real truth.  From lengthy conversations with a TV producer friend involved with one such series/celebrity.

"Cut".....now sod this tent.....lets get back to that 5 star hotel/restaurant.....see you tomorrow guys.....

I read that about Bear Grylls in the Cairngorms.

Seemingly it had been a long time since he had seen his family so they were in the Hilton @ Colyumbridge.

@wyx087

On BBC Reporting Scotland they just showed the route right up the Americas.

No it wasn't him, this was quite a long time ago. All I can really say is the person I refer to was very demanding (both finanacially and it terms of what luxuries he expected to be provided).

Wow, he did a 10,000 miles Rally in a Leaf?

I wonder what the rapid charging network would be like in South America.

Also, which truck he'll be using.... Rivian?
