Buying a 2017 Superb SEL executive

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a Superb 2017 1.4 manual. Is there anything I need to know about? Any common problems to look for?

Thanks for any advice.

Chrome trim above door coming loose.

Glove box not staying closed.

Scored brake discs at rear.

Creaking suspension at low speed over speed bumps.

Door handles coming loose (or off).

Removed reference to dsg

Of the list above, I can record that my January 2017 SEL Executive has only suffered occasional creaking over speed bumps.

My 2018 1.4Tsi  needed new rear discs and pads at 27K  due to rust, scoring.. Otherwise only issue was brake pad rattle fixed under warranty by shims being fitted. Known issue.

Just out of interest, is there a specific reason you want a manual gearbox?  The reason I ask is that I have a manual but wish I'd gone for a Dsg.

For fuel economy primarily.

If you think you can drive smarter/more economically than the DSG, you can always move the lever over to manual, or even use the paddles in automatic.

I always had a manual box until now. After DSG, I'll never go back to manual. The first time you sit in a traffic jam, you'll be glad for the automatic and stop/start.

DSG boxes aren't like the old autos. As the initials state it's direct shift, no torque converter that soaks up the power.

I think you would find it extremely difficult to get better mpg.

I see 50+ quite often on 'B' road runs.

Exactly the car I've got (except  a year newer) mine also has the rusty rear discs and creaks  a bit over speed bumps.  It did have a new  glove  box fitted  under warranty but that was pre purchase.  Mines a manual and having driven a dsg  karoq I'm glad I stuck  with manual.  That  said if  most  of my miles  were round  town I would be tempted by dsg.

We had a 2017 1.4 manual for 3 years  8 months and had no issues whatsoever.  Averaged 45 mpg (calculated) over that [period but on a 1000 mile road trip in Scotland it would average 53+ for the week. Brilliant car.

When we were changing ours last October we wanted another Superb but an auto this time, and despite looking almost nationwide could not get a drive in a 2 litre. So we had a 1.5 DSG for 24 hours and I have to report it was not a car I would buy. In drive the car was very slow to pick up and changed up very early, put it in sport and the pick up was better but it hung on to the lower gears far to long compared to the revs I could use in our manual. Not the car for us. Out of interest we tried a Passat estate 1.5 DSG and it was much better but it still had its moments.

Quite by chance our local dealer just happened to have some pre-reg Superb IV's in, drove one, loved it and bought it. In that the DSG integrates perfectly, very impressed and happy with the car. Paid less for it than the 1.5 Passat would have cost us.

If we had not bought the iV it would have been a Volvo V60, the auto in that was way better than the DSG (but at the expense of fuel economy).
