Black smoke! Why? :)

Featured Replies

Hi guys!

Well first, I know tdi +smoke someone said its normal, which is okay, but my SE is standard apart from cat back exhaust, so.. Injectors are okay showing perfect numbers on vag com, so the car is running fine, pulls okay  tried the 30 min journey on 70mph and still, smoke looks healthy no grey, no white, "just" black , I bought the car like this smokey on accelerate and some gas, have friend who ownd another SE, absolute no smoke only a bit on accelerate, so guys I need some help.. What's the most common issue? Where should I start the investigate?

Thank you very much :)

Chris

The most common cause of black smoke is a bad remap.

thank you! well the car was not mapped, so its fully standard with 93k, and also not feel the map, just  pulls as a standard car

The most common reason for black smoke is overfuelling.

There are a number of possible reasons for this:-

  1. Worn injectors
  2. Clogged air filter
  3. Boost leak
  4. Turbo problem
  5. Something else I don't know about because I don't know which engine you have.

Thank you :) engine code is BLT. And how can I check it? I mean overfueling... Thanks

I'm amazed it's not been mapped with a cat back exhaust fitted. Shocked actually.

What about an ebay resistor of powah, they always make em smokey?

As you have Vagcom someone with you should be able to view boost on a laptop in real time to look for leaks, or a bluetooth OBD2 adaptor with Torque on an Android phone or tablet will give viewable boost in real time. Do you know full history and all owners to be sure it has not had a remap as a bad one may give no extra power "pulls as a standard car" but could just create smoke. The screen dump is at tick-over which is why there is no boost registering, but as the revs rise boost shows in real time.

Thank you! I will check it, well first owner owned it till 2018 from new, next owner was a guy who sell it to me, comes with a full service history etc soo yeahh of course  I'm not 100% shure it's been mapped in 2018-2020,guy said never been mapped, when I tryed the car was as I said feel like a standard no a huge boost just a normal stock pd130, okay what if it mapped by a idiot who create a s*it map 😂? How can I go back to stock? And course soon will check all boost pipes etc because as I know it can cause a black smoke

Thank you

If you can find a standard map I understand that it just won't load up and work due to immobiliser issues and equipment configurations, but can be used to compare with the map already on your ECU if you download it, then use EDC15P. Complicated so suggest you identify other possible issue - boost, air filter etc - first, or get professional advice. Could it not have been mapped pre 2018?

Thank you! Will check everything before do something with map etc.. Emm before 2018 a family owned and they absolutely not modified it :) and well look after the car as I see itn the book, only skoda stamps etc, when the guy bought it he change the exhaust and and air filter, he said it was totally enough modification for him.. Well I believed him soo..  :D only "little thing" was bad... A faulty injector +2.99  on the 4.cylinder.. And cause of the bad injector.. Flywheel gone.. So we change the all injector set and now all perfect, and got a brand new sachs kit with flywheel

If you've believed 10 impossible things before lunch, why not end your morning with breakfast at Milliway's, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe? ;)

Yes, piece of junk can be hard to spot if the underbonnet landscape is a mystery.

Can't see anything in the fuse box guys, any other way how can I check this little s*it? :D

Wife’s had hers since it was 2 months back in 2005

Used to chuck black smoke out when accelerating. Used to fill it up at super markets etc.

when I got my new car 5years ago starting putting Bp in and then starting filling Fabia Vrs up with Bp.

Over time it cleared up and nowhere near as bad

Ok, adding "supermarket diesel" to list of possible reasons thanks.

Have run my mk1 on everything and it would smoke on everything. White, green, red diesel, pure kero, even veg oil it would smoke. Doesnt smoke a lot now though.

Black smoke is unburnt fuel, as @KenONeill correctly pointed out, it's overfuelling, however the reason is trickier to divine. I'd change the ECT sensor then the FTS.

My mechanic check what's under the car, and cat is there and looks ok, one more thing, smokey not only when accelerate :) even if I just press a pedal a bit  :/

Its a relatively common practice to gut the catalyst on older diesels for better flow. The Cat itself gets gutted but the outer case and downpipe is kept to pass MOT. MOT only tests smoke and I think they only do a visual inspection on the catalyst. No catalyst, more smoke.

Its not done it in a while, it used to roll major coal though will keep those sensors in mind.
