"Take the wheel!"

Featured Replies

Why is my new Karoq telling me to "take the wheel"? The message is normally followed or preceded by a message too short lived to read properly along the lines of"drive in the centre!" Usually happens when driving on narrow lanes with no or poor road marking. I assume it is something to do with the lane keeping assist, but I don't understand why I'm being nagged by the car. It's bad enough having the wife moan about my speed. 😂

Maybe James May was interfering with Skoda software. If you were TG fan you will know what im talking about..😁

Amusing but not very helpful 😁

On a serious note..Lane assist gimmick..

Btw, in that episode May explains how ,if he was a head of wv software department, he would throw in few messages who would appear on your screen briefly and just few times in years  (like..Your wife is having and affair, Boil your head, You wasted your life etc…) but you would  never be sure was it for real or just your imagination…😂

Does the lane assist have a sensitivity adjustment?

How old is your car Crookie?

On my previous Golf SV, when you used lane assist on a straight motorway it gave a similar message if you were driving in a straight line for too long as it the steering wheel to move now and then. And if it didn't, it assumed you had taken your hands off the wheel.

But on MY21 Karoqs I understand it uses capacitive sensors on the rim of the steering wheel to know when your hands were on the wheel.

Car manufacturers obviously can't let drivers take their hands off the wheel and rely on the lane assist to steer the car yet!

Lane assist...hmm.. useful but not really feature, best turned off. It only works when it can clearly see the edges of the lane and will warn you when it cuts out which can be at any moment.

It does help you drive more smoothly and easily on a well marked road. I do enable it when on a dual c'way or motorway for any distance.

I don't think I would have paid extra for it but it was in the spec of the vehicle I bought from a showroom. I had never come across this feature before in previosu cars.

Can't say I've ever found Lane assist useful, luckily I don't have it on my car but did on my Ford, even on it's lowest setting a gentle shudder through the wheel I found it distracting, I disabled it using Forscan

It only does that if you try to change lane without indicating. Useful reminder at times.

Lane Keep Assist will have to be on all new type approved cars from early next year along with other stuff that the EU has made mandatory.

VW group do seem to be way off having the best systems that other manufacturers seem to have been able to adopt.

Love LKA as is showed me just how often my mind wanders and so does my car go wandering off across centre lines. (Broken lines)

It works fine for me even on country roads with no markings and worked fine on winter snow covered roads.  I did put it off when there were untreated roads or black ice about this winter.

Each to his own!

I had it on my previous Golf SV back in 2014 and I find it useful and very sensitive to lane markings. It even picks up some near roadworks that have been painted over! The only time I turn it off is when roads are icy as it removes the feel of the slippery road.

Not on the Karoq, nor my previous Octavia..  On or off.

Needs development, IMHO.  It needs clear (white) lane markings each side, and only mild chages in direction - i.e. wide sweeping curves.  No good on fast B roads because the road direction changes too quickly for the software to keep up.  Th every few times I tried it  - usually on dead straight Motorways - I found it deadened and stiffened the steering feel.

Or on narrow back roads

A wee pull of the wheel to keep you off the edge of the narrow back road is not a bad thing.

It does not take over control of the car. You can still steer off the road or onto the verge or in the ditch if you want to.

I don't need the car to tell me I can do it by myself, and it bloody annoying, thank fully I don't have it.

Automation is coming! According to the DVLA, 52% of the UK's Karoqs have DSGs as owners realise the benefits of automatic gearboxes. And if an inattentive driver is coming towards me I'd be very happy if the Lane Assist on his car prompted him to take his eyes off his phone and return to his lane! Now if we could only get automatic indicators for BMWs

Chris

It's not so much owners realizing the benefits of DSG boxes, but the VW Group pushing them into every drivetrain, whether the prospective buyers would like it or not.

Try getting a high power diesel with manual gearbox, always an excellent combination for long motorway runs - you can't anymore. Everything 6 cylinder or 4 cylinder and 160bhp+ is DSG only.

I used to have  a Mk1 V6 6-speed diesel Superb, I frequently did  800 - 1200 mile night trips in under 100 gear changes each, what is the point of a DSG box for this? Not everyone sits in traffic jams...

And of course, you only need to change manual gearbox oil perhaps every 100k miles or so, while DSG boxes force much more frequent changes.

As for other bits of automation, my 2016 mk3 vRS Octavia confuses contrasting bits of tarmac for lane markings from time to time, as well as the roadworks side barriers from time to time. Lane assist is not reliable enough to keep it on even in very good weather, IMHO.

Front assist is even worse, false alerts when overtaking HGVs abroad or here in the UK on a motorway bend, and the sensor can be disabled by a big enough bug splashing on it (at least for a while, until the bug dries out).

In my opinion, what is getting released onto the market is a product of wishful thinking and design to pass artificial tests, as opposed to design for things to work in real life using some common sense. Too many bull$hitters and so called visionaries in management, especially ones afraid of driving cars...

They need to get the Low Average C02 g/km from what are being first registered, hence the need for DSG's, then the Plug in Hybrids, and the small capacity petrol TSI's to soon be DSG only with Mild Hybrid.

The Manual Petrol & Diesels days are numbered unless they can flog lots of those on the top line and lots of the EV's once Skoda can get production ramped up.

Again from the DVLA figures, the commonest Karoq variant on the roads is the SE L 1.5TSI. Of those, 5849 are manual and 7216 DSG. So with a free choice owners are willing to spend more to buy the DSG equipped cars.

And for the SE L 2.0TDI, 357 were the manual FWD, 642 were manual 4x4, and 726 DSG 4x4 cars.

I make this 999 manual cars and 726 slushboxes.

Correct... for that engine and trim. There were also 1525 SE 1.0TSIs which were all manual as that doesn't come with a DSG box. But the overall figures show more DSGs than manual still.

DVLA or SMMT figures do not really tell the tale of what those buying or leasing a car might of got and what was First Registered for new Owners / Drivers.

Skoda / VW / Audi / SEAT know that low average C02 g/km was required.

So VW Group give a good deal to VW Finance, Lease Companies, Hire Car Companies and Utilities / Local Authorities / Fleets / MOTABILITY finance which is the biggest car buyer in the UK.

Skoda models are being offered at low cost as are SEAT on the Motability List.

So 400 Citigo EV's were registered, other lower emission vehicles were Pre-reg or became Demonstrators / Management cars and then Motability Finance bought a good few low emission vehicles that there was Low or Nil Advance Payments on for those getting a car from Motability.

It all helped Skoda and the cars that were first registered and VW Group own get sold as used cars.  The Motability ones that they bought go to BCA in 3 years time.

No going back for me. First dsg was my last car. A Yeti 150ps tai.

When changing to current car it had to be dsg. Never again to suffer from left leg screaming out in a traffic jam from constant use. Indeed I was caught in a 30min crawl on the A1 yesterday and the dsg saved me from hundreds of clutch operations.

And one of the comments above talking about manuals and “slush boxes” can only be from someone who has not had the pleasure of owning a dsg which is actually an automated true gearbox with a clutch, not a torque converter wasting large amounts of power
