using a different sized spare wheel (for short distances)?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I got to wondering, since my car has 17"s fitted but has a 15" spare, would it damage the car to run with a spare wheel in the case of a puncture? I wouldn't have thought it would matter on the back, apart from handling, as it's FWD, but I'm worried it would damage the gearbox or something at the front??

rears are 205 45 17, fronts are 205 40 17. The spare is a 205 55 15, I believe, so there is an inch or so's difference in height.

Let me know if you've tried it!!

Although rim size is 15 inch your tyre that you have fitted on the spare is  ok because the profile (55) makes the tyre when fitted to the 15 inch rim makes it the same car height with the lower profile of the other rims/tyres, this is common with the MK III cars with a spare, the standard spare size is 185/55/15 and carries a yellow sticker for 50mph this is for the handling of the car not the tyre as it's a normal size tyre  unlike other thin get you home wheels so you can leave the rim on to suit yourself just doesn't look very good, i did try one of the 17 rims in the spare wheel in the rear but would not fit in properly and not secure down so can see why they use the smaller sized tyre and rim

205/40 R 17 so the OEM size for a Mk2 vRS or Monte Carlo fit just fine in the spare tyre well on Gigaro or Trinity Rims.

Even 215/40 R 17 or 205/45 R 17's fit as i have had all in the spare tyre well when having that size fitted to Fabia Hatches.

If you have a fully packed car and you need to use the spare then you want to put the wheel and tyre that comes off someplace and that should fit in the spare tyre well partially inflated or fully inflated if it still is.

The spare is a Golf sized tyre, too big for the Fabia, should be 195 50 15, why do you have different sized tyres front and rear.

The wheel speed sensors won't like the spare, my guess is it'll put the ABS and ESR or ESP warning lights on.

The overall size / rolling diameter of the spare is not to far off so should pose no issues using it............. but you have a + 3% diff between front and rear now......as already asked, Why ???

Thanks Panzer...that's what I wanted to hear.

Because I wanted less low profile tyres as the ride was (still is tbh) shocking, and the rears needed replacing but the fronts don't yet. Simple as that.

I've just noticed that the spare is a 195/55/15! I misquoted

Exact same rolling diameter as the fronts, but 20mm smaller than the rears.
