Yep, run it at least once a week, rain or shine!

I'm having a new condensor fitted on 7th of June, hopefully that will sort out the problems with mine.

But the aircon doesn't work if the outside temperature is below +2 degrees C (according to the handbook), so it's not much use on a really cold rainy night. Still, that's better than the Octy1, when the aircon wouldn't work below +6 degrees C....

True, but it still clears up your misted windows when you switch on the Auto switch, have a try next time you get fogged up.

I think you'll find that it will work whatever the prevailing outside temperature, and if it doesn't, just switch it to recirculate for a few seconds with a/c on and your windows will demist.

Well Skoda UK don't have any compressor's in stock so I'm still without ac :(

It switches itself off at low temperatures (but the light stays on) to prevent parts of the system freezing and becoming damaged I believe. Seems to be common to all cars I've owned with air con, although the cut off temp seems to vary. :D

Hot In THe City, Cool In The Cab. Had a A/C Compressor fitted today and fingers crossed feeling good. Bill

So you had a duff compressor?

Yes, it didnt work from new . My first skoda, hope thats the end of the problem.

I know how you feel it is all very well saying things are covered under warranty, but I do not buy a vehicle for it to spend days and weeks in a workshop waiting to be fixed, hence most of previous vehicles were Japanese. It was Skoda's reliability ratings and owner reports that was the primary reason for me buying the Octavia.

That said the air con does work well in cooling things down and that Cruise Control is proving very useful.

Lucky bugger, must have got the last compessor at Skoda uk

  • 11 months later...

My 06 Octavia which I've owned for 2 months went in for an air con failure, they re-gassed it 3 weeks ago and now it's failed again meaning yet another trip to the dealer.

Did they say what the cause of the leak was? they can't just stick more refrigerant in it without finding the leak.

They actually told me that no leak could be found but didn't explain how the coolant disappeared in the first place.

It leaked.......................:D

Maybe they will stick some U.V. dye in next time to help identify where the gas is escaping.

I'm having a similar problem with my Climatronic. It was working fine, then an hour later it wasn't - air is coming through, but it isn't cold. I've had it back to the garage but they haven't found the fault yet. They say the climatronic/fan/compressor/etc are all working fine, but it's just not cooling. They found no fault codes. They checked for leaks (using dye) and found none. They now think it would be worth recharging the gas because this is the only thing left. (The car is just under 2 years old.)

Does the gas go "faulty" as opposed to just leak? They say there is gas in the system (but possibly not enough?). Would this explain why it stopped working so suddenly??

It sounds like it could be the flap motors. Would/should they have picked this up? Would it produce a fault code, or is it possible they just haven't considered this as a possibility?

I'm not sure about this Climatronic business. I think it just decides it has reached the set temperature, and stops putting in more cool air till the car warms up enough for IT to notice.

I'm inclined to just set mine on old fashioned a/c [i.e. put it on "lo"] and let it get as cool as I want, then just turn the fan noise down. When it is cool enough I put it back on econ at a low setting. I know it can't get cooler than the outside air on econ, but it seems ok in our climate. If I get too hot I stick it on "lo a/c" again.

The gas is R134a so it won't degrade as such, the A/C system will obviously drop in performance if there is a leak but this will take quite a bit of time unless it's a big'un. If the correct charge is present then replacing the gas won't make a jot of difference unless it is contaminated but this is unlikely.

If the garage has the facility they can weigh the refrigerant out of the system, comparing this to the data plate charge you can immediately see whether less gas has come out than what went in originally. If it's short of gas it could be intermittently tripping the LP switch but I would have expected a fault code for that.

Have you tried running the system flat out on it's coldest setting for a good period of time? (temp:LO fan: max outlet:face ECON:OFF AUTO:OFF) try it and monitor it's performance.

I tried this (fan may not have been on max, but quite high) for a few hours, but it still didn't give cold air. I thought it was warmer than the outside air (outside was showing around 23C), but that could have been my imagination! Ended up having to drive with the windows open as well.

I think you need to have the gas pulled out to see if any has leaked.

If you have tried running it on flat out cooling it could be a refrigeration problem.

If no faults have been found with the electronic element of the system then it's back to basics, check the gas charge!

There're going to charge the gas tomorrow. I don't know if they will be able to check how much is in it just now, or if they'll just replace it and hope it works.

Although they say no fault has been found in the electronic element, I just wondered if it would be obvious if something like a flap had stuck. It just seems odd that after several hours driving when it was cooling without problems (and it was cooling - you could tell when opening the door to get out!), and hour later it completely gives up.

Time will tell. In many ways I hope the gas charge works - at least I wouldn't have to wait for parts - but I'd then be wondering how long it would last....

Mine did not work, but a recharge fixed the problem and it has worked OK ever since.

Great in this very wet and high humidity weather we are currently having.
