What is this sound (video)? cv joint, drive shaft....

Featured Replies

Hello guys!

i always have had this sound when turning and accelerating to one of the side (dont remember exactly if to the right or left, i think both.) and when climbing a very step hill.

but yesterday the sound came very strong and loud in straight and plain road.

and i am not too sure of the name of those parts, i confuse all of them, cv joint, outer, or inner cv joint, drive shaft etc...

My thought would be cv joint if its more pronounced when turning.

i did replace that, gone for now, have not drive on highways yet to fully test it

If its a bad cv joint just turning your steering fully at stand still you will here it so hopefully youve resolved the issue with the cv joint change :)

Was it a new one or used?

You have to be a few olives short of a pizza to do that one IMO. :giggle:

Wow wasted effort bud you just don't do that with key components buy new.

"Buy cheap (used) buy twice" is a good (and applicable) saying at this point.

I think the apt saying at this point is penny wise pound foolish 😟

Anyway, the focus here is on getting that CV joint replaced with a new one for peace of mind and to aid in the process of elimination. :)

Incorrect advice, a worn CV joint is only revealed when the driveshafts are turning and on full lock.

I agree but we dont know someones financial situation and the cost & availability of parts in the unspecified country.

In my first 12 years of motoring the breakers yards were my first port of call for everything, main dealer prices were silly, just getting served at a motor factors was a challenge in itself, a CV joint was absolutely beyond my means it would be a second hand one & if the vehicle had newish brake pads they would replace my scabby old ones.

Things got better, much better but fast forward to 2010 & I was in France in severe financial hardship living on €348 per month (I have the ledger on the coffee table as a reminder) the availability & cost of parts was worse than the UK was in the 70's, I hung out again at the same breakers yard pulling apart an ex Police Octavia for the front struts, springs, track rod with inner joint (I had hit a kerb), I only needed the latter the suspension was an upgrade just as I used to.

The big difference was myself and a few immigrants were the  only ones there picking over the wrecks I was delighted to encounter the 88 year old owner of the yard still driving the front loader moving wrecks around, we remenisced that in the 70's and 80's the yard was full of punters all day long 6 days a week, now they only allow people access on a Saturday and there are a handfull of punters.

It's important to remember that in many countries the situation is little different for many people.

To the OP, knowing you have had a driveshaft changed that noise sounds to me like the retaining bolt has come loose, possibly a caliper about to fall off, it sounds terminal and should be investigated ASAP.

I think of the four driveshafts on my Polo and her Fabia, 3 are 2nd hand, with no subsequent problems. :)

Unfortunately Kharl has an SDI if memory serves, this means lots of torque at low RPM which is why SDI's eat gearboxes and CV joints compared to the puny petrols owned by the usual awkward squad contrarians.

You have to compare apples with apples chaps.

I blew out the driveshaft and drivers wheel bearing on my sdi not long after I got it, and put used ones on. Its lasted for a long time but I think it'll need replaced before It goes back on the road proper.  If a used parts in good enough shape then theres no reason not to buy it. Atleast it keeps the car on the road for a bit more and allows you to save up for if it goes again.

That is a point why mostly buy used in this country, most Fabias are petrol, diesel parts are not easy to get new, they are unexplained expensive.

but there is something i need to know, cv isnt the same in petrol than in diesel, in this case?

because some local stores here just ask me for the part, they dont ask if the car is diesel or petrol.

HEllo !

well.. the cv joint is fine, it ended up being the inner joint, the homocinetic?

the part arrive today so i am waiting to replace it...

BUT i want to share something

yesterday, while removing the whole axle to inspect it, when installing back, the mechanic had to hammer several time the center to pull it, (i dot agree that hitting any part of the car is the way...)

when i turned on the car i receive a service oil message....

could the hits make loose the oil sensor connector and maybe a false contact trigger the alert?

i checked the oil level, all good, and no oil leak after axle installation.

what sensor or wire or connector should i inspect?

Service message just a coincidence, I think, as long as you don't mean a low oil pressure red light?

CV joint and whole driveshaft part numbers can be found on this page. Filter by engine code ASY in the 'data model' column.

View on computer, not phone to see all of the info: drive shaft; for manual gearbox - Fabia(FAB) [EUROPA 2002 year] (7zap.com)

Inner (and outer?) CV joints appear to the same part number on the ASY as on both of the 1.2 engine codes AWY, AZQ.

Sdi only has 125nm of torque, not that much more than the 1.2l petrols. Probably explains why the parts are the same.

Service oil message would just be a coincidence, iirc it comes on after a certain amount of time or mileage and I believe there is some way to see the service interval on the gauges, reset them also.

Hi, thank you for your response, inner, (the one next to the gearbox)

regarding the service oil light, my previous engine used to have serious oil consumption, and was frecuent to run low in oil, when the engine oil was too low the low oil light came on and the service oil message too, when i put oil in, the low oil light goes off but the service oil needed to be reset, that happened me three times (with the old engine), run out of oil, low oil and service oil..

this time i suspect with the vibration and shaking due hitting the metalic part, maybe.. i dont know...

ohh, you mean, the computer is noticing the time since the last oil change and how many kilometers i have done?

last oil interval was in november 1st, 6,500km since that

When you say low oil light, is that a yellow warning light?

MK1 Fabias sold in the UK market didn't get oil level sensors, so they're not much discussed here.
