Winter wheel options

Featured Replies

Hi,

I plan to get some winter tyres for my Superb mk3 Estate. It’s on the stock 18 inch alloys at the moment and would like a smaller set of alloys for the winter tyres.

I’m struggling to find out what wheels will fit my car.  What were the stock options from factory?  What were the different rim styles called so I can include them when trying to search?

Thanks!

Have a look at pages 108 and 126 of this Superb brochure, there are 20 + 19 wheels listed with pictures

I have used Borbet rims for my winter wheels, they have a handy wheel finder, and can find what will fit without adaptors or different bolts

a good resource...

Skoda Superb - Specs of wheel sizes, tires, PCD, Offset and Rims - Wheel-Size.com

I have bought a set of standard 16" steel wheels and 215/65/16 winter tyres for mine, were bought used.

Painted them silver and instead of wheel trims used VW caddy centre caps.

They are companies that supply winter sets with tyres if preferred.... will post a link if I can find one.

I meant 215/60/16 tyres ;)

Keep an eye on VW forums for 2nd hand wheels. Many fit and you maybe lucky.

I got some 2nd hand VW wheels with winter tyres on.

Same here

Borbet alloys and mytyres order made recently

I have some wheels that would work. They are old seat wheels with Octavia size tyres on currently. Happy to offer them for a good price. Not bad nick but a refurb wouldn't go amiss. Price would reflect that of course.

Thank you all for the replies.

I imagine I will be looking toward the 17 inch wheels unless there's any good reason to go with 16 inch?

Thanks!

The 16 inch rims tend to be cheaper

215/60 R16 winter tyres are plentiful with lots of brands available, 215/55 R17 tyres are also easy to get, but tend to be £15-30 per tyre more expensive.  So a rough rule of thumb is assume will cost £100 more for 17 inch than 16 inch

So main benefit for 16 inch is price, the other is that it much harder to catch the kerb and scratch the rim with the deeper 60 profile tyres.

The second reason is why I went for winter wheels.  The risk of understeering into the kerb on black ice or compacted snow killing an 18" alloy.

I couldn't find a cheap 17" steel so ended up with 17"alloys.

Thanks! 😁. Only 2 years too late for me. I wasn't ready to start shifting away from the OEM spec ET values.  Mytyres comes up with some minilite lookalikes at £70+ when you search by my specific car.

At least I dont have 'helpful' colleagues asking who stole my hub caps like I did with my mondeo on black winter steelies. (For the cool euro winter look😎)

The other advantage of winter tyres is that your summer ones last twice as long🤭
