amp turning on and off

Featured Replies

well i did it bought myself a jbl sub and amp wired it all up (must say the search facility on the site is fantastic grommet located in mins)

turned on this morning and the amp keeps cutting out intermittantly

any one got any ideas i'm thinking bad ground i used the one under thelight cluster ths head unit keeps playing so thats ok just the sub dropping

car is in dealers a the mo for arb bushes and drop links warranty yea!!!!

will look at problem later but if any one has any thoughts let me know

cheers

I had problems with the earthing from the light cluster. I ended up drilling a hole in the boot floor, cutting it back to bare metal with a dremmel and then using a 10mm bolt to create a good earth. All my problems were solved by that.

could be bad earth, i had this when i transferred my sub and amp into my Vrs. Where are you running the signal from? It may sound silly but some have done this from the electric aerial signal by mistake which shuts the amp off when you select CD on some head units.

My bets on bad earth tho, maybe clean up the metal with a little sandpaper so you've got bare metal.

no it played fine till this morning i think its the ground ill have a look later nice one fellas

I had a similar issue and it turns out that there was only an intermittant connection between the fuse and the +12V cable. You may want to chack that out too just in case. Also a multimeter at the ready is always handy!

when you between the fuse and 12v cable you mean from the battery to the fuseholder ?

i used the seat belts mounts for my earth's, nice big bolts :)

also cleaning the paint off can make quite a difference ;)

what sub and amp are you running, model numbers would be nice so we can get specs. is it a mono amp or a multi-channel amp?

it s a jbl gto 2000 amp and a jbl sub ive tried turning the down gain cos i got 5volt pre outs and its ok at volume but no soon as you crank it up it up it cuts for a split second then back on then off then on etc etc i cleaned the ground on the light cluster still no good ill try the seatbelt mounting now

the amp is 2 channel running in mono so should be fine ive done all the ice years ago so i know what im doing havin said that it was years ago so i am probably a rusty

What gauge wire are you running on your supply and earth?

  • Author

only a cheap autoleads wiring kit for now probably about 12 gauge or less

doubt smaller cable would cause cutting out of just one small-ish sub all it would do is overheat a bit.

just make sure you have connected the sub to the correct terminals for running the amp bridged as i and others i know have connected it wrong in the past so you end up running a 200W for example speaker off of a 50W channel :o

good chance its the earth though, is there anything overthe top of the amp? it may be over heating.

Just making sure there wasnt 8 gauge going in and 3.5mm wire used as an earth, seen it done god knows how many times.

the sub is wired right bridged to mono ill try the seatbelt mounting trick now brb

amp is on boot floor for thr moment nice and kool to touch

right ive just moved the ground to the light cluster as the eye on the wire will be to small for the seatbelt mount ive cleaned back to metal on the light cluster will test after my tea

the hole was indeed too small on mine, just stick under one side of the lower plate and tighten the hell out of it ;)

you can tell i'm a sparky can't you :D

I filed my terminal out to the correct size. ;)

do you mean on the seatbelt now

well ive tried it again still doing it its fine at low volume anything over about 23-4 on the volume and it goes the amp is stone cold it does it as sooon as you power up h.u. so not heat related

what about the soldered joint the sub if they were dry would it cause somthing like this maybe

cheers i do appreciate your help on this matter

Check the speaker cables at both ends for a short.

A single strand of copper out of place will cause an amp to cut out at high volumes.

what sub is it you are running from the amp? the amp is 2x75Wrms or 1x200Wrms @4ohm

if the sub is noticibly more than this or a 2ohm sub and if the amp isn't 2ohm stable then this will make it cut out.

just been looking at the spec for the amp and JBL say it's 4ohm stable at upto220Wrms bridged but is only 2ohm stable when being used as a multichannel amp.

so if you have a 2ohm sub then turning it up cause it cut out like it is, i had the same problem when i ran two of my subs at 1ohm seeing as the manufacturer claimed the amp was 1ohm stable even though it cut out all the time when loud.

i now have a big mo-fo amp and running 1200W RMS at 2ohm off of it and it has capacity for another 400W RMS at 2ohm :D

  • Author

amp is 220 rms sub is 250 rms i checked the joins they all look good so i'm puzzled now

  • Author

both running at 4 ohm

my next thought is the switch cable

matched closely enough but itsd better if possible to have a slightly higher rated amp than sub so you don't burn the sub out :)

the remote cable shouldn't be affected by volume though as its only a 12v signal and carries no load as such.

does the sub cut out when revving aswell as idle?
