My Starter motor is not disengaging - Fabia Mk1 1.9 tdi YG07DWA

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I hope that someone can help me.

So, this is what happened -

I drove roughly 60 miles yesterday - mainly motorway and 10 miles of that A road. I made 1 stop and as i drove off - I heard loud (rattling sort of ) noise from the engine bay. I turned the car off to have a look and after that it will not switch on. There was no problem with fuel delivery, battery was fine i.e., when I turn the key to Acc, all the dash lights etc were coming on, but nothing when i turn the key to ignition.

I managed to bump start it - that made me think - it must be the starter motor. So, I changed the starter motor and old starter motor was cooked. I am able to start the car but starter motor is not disengaging by itself. I am having to turn the key back ever so slightly for it to disengage - I hope that makes sense.

So, what could it be? After browsing forums - I am thinking ignition switch. I have seen videos online on how to replace it. Would you say that is the right route to go down or am i supposed to take it to Skoda specialist garage?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. As I don't want to burn new starter motor as well.

Kind regards

Yogi

Am I right to assume - replacing the switch is plug and play - i.e. no programming etc required.

Yes it's plug and play.

Hello guys,

It's me again.

I managed to get the part but I cannot undo the 2 torx screws underneath the steering wheel.

What I am finding is that I can't get my long torx screwdriver to go in their straight as it's at an angle. I hope you understand what I am saying.

I can't get it to any garage for at least another 2 weeks.

Is there anyone in Kent who is willing to help me? Of course I will pay.

Thank you in advance guys but I am very desperate.

Do you mean the screws that hold the plastic shroud together?

Yes exactly that

Yes exactly that

You have to rotate the white to the left and right to reveal them

Anyone guys?

I am really stuck - I just can't get the screwdriver to grip on to the screw due to the angle.

Thanks

I have tools to take care of this type of problem, can you remove the steering wheel?

  • Author

I can if I really have to but din't want to ideally.

On the video that I saw on you tube - the guy manages to take out those 2 torx screws with ease.

But I just cannot do it. Steering comes in the way.

Forgot to mention- I have bohemia model, so the steering wheel is chunky version.

I am in Kent.

Thanks

I am in Sussex, it's too far, remove the wheel.

Hi guys,

Just an update.

I feel stupid now but the reason I was not able to undo those 2 torx screws because someone had changed them to t10 and I was trying t20 screwdriver - hence why it was not gripping it.

Have a look.

I am going to try changing the switch itself tomorrow.

I saw on a video that switch and key has to be on position 1. Getting the key to position 1 is easily done lol 😆 but how do I make sure that ignition switch is on position 1.

Kind regards
