1.2 Tsi S estate - questions regarding the dash display

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have recently acquired a late 2016 S model estate and after reading the owners manual it seems that I cannot see anything on the dash display other than the outside temperature. The car doesn't have a temperature gauge like my wife's Octavia and also doesn't seem to allow me to change the display - I would like to see the mpg or engine temperature for example.

Does anyone know if the dash display can be changed either by VCDS or other means please?

Thank you in advance for your help on this as I feel I may have more queries to come.

Gary

Hi Gary, firstly well done for reading the Owner's Manual, that may well answer a lot of your future queries and by reading it and referring to it you learn more about the car than many longer term owners know (because they don't read it or refer to it).

Unfortunately it doesn't cover what you're asking, I assume you've checked through the Infotainment menus to see what's on offer there on your model.

I've no idea what's hidden or not on the various spec levels but wonder if it might be about having the computers on the car or just menus blocked.

MPG, on a VW product, really, the old gallons by tripometer mileage might be more accurate.

You may already know about keeping your car battery charged if you do lots of short journeys and more so with diesel and for the DPF but a useful video anyway . - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkL9wYgWLlI

You might be beyond below, but it also has a link to pdf for Infotainment book too, and the video channel also has videos for Octavia Mk2 too.

HTH.

I ran a 2014 S Spec for a while (one of the last mk2 Fabia) and that didn’t have much in instrumentation, for temperature think there was just a blue light for when engine was cold (and probably a red one for hot, but that never came on)

The rocker switch on end of indicator stalk didn’t exist either so couldn’t call up different displays like the mid and higher spec versions.   S spec was always basic (but it did have advantage, rather less to fail or breakdown)

A recent mk3 Fabia "S" specification for sale on Autotrader shows a steering wheel without rollers and rocker switches.

The manual for our 65 plate shows the attached - a rocker on the end of the indicator stalk.

I think you can choose/limit what to "step through" in the menus on the radio/infotainment system, even if it is the basic "Swing" version.

However, a further search shows SFA on the end of the indicator stalk on a more recent Fabia...

ETA: I was still typing whilst John posted, not unusual for me.

Gary,

I've just remember I've got a copy of the Fabia sales brochure "Effective December 2016" for the S model it shows a "Maxi DOT trip computer" as an optional extra.  There are other optional extras including some just for estates but not relating to what you've asked about.

According to the brochure the model S has 'Swing' radio but then the downloadable pdf of the 'Swing' 'Owner's Manual' has - "The device may differ depending on the vehicle model, in which it is installed in both its appearance and in the arrangement of the controls" so needs that detail. - https://ws.skoda-auto.com/OwnersManualService/Data/en/Fabia_NJ/11-2016/Infotainment/Swing/A06_Fabia_Swing_InfotainmentSystem_Navigation.pdf

It's looking like you may need more that just the software but I don't know what lies dormant in the cars.

If I can look anything else up from the brochure for you just ask, I'd forgot I'd kept it.

December 2016

My "Effective December 2016" sales brochure only shows a "3 spoke leather steering wheel" as a factory fitted extra (without switches).

What Infotainment system do you have?

If you have the Bolero system and a MFD ( Multi Function Display ) on the dash then you can change what info is shown via the Bolero system.

Live MPG and Oil Temperature are options.

Thanks, AG Falco

The photos with the advert I looked at earlier showed what I took to be a "Swing" -

3 buttons either side, SD card slot on the front, and a small screen.

The "S" spec was always a bit minimal, but it seems worse now than it was years ago with the MK2 Fabia

Of course it's possible that the car isn't as standard or the car differs from above.

Gary,

more info or photo(s) are need to pin this down for you, not that I know about the software but others will.

Hi Guys,

Many thanks for the replies so far it's much appreciated.

So to clarify things a bit further the car does not have a multifunction steering wheel and it also does not have a rocker switch on the end of the wiper stalk to select various options (it does however have a rocker switch on the top of the same stalk for the variable intermittant wiper speed).

It has the swing type infotainment system as shown in the picture earlier in the thread (thanks johnh510 for that as it shows nicely the steering wheel and also the dash with the temperature on display).

I cannot see any option within the infotainment system that allows you to alter what shows up on the dash display and I'm not familiar with a maxidot display unless that's what is fitted to my wifes 2019 Octavia SEL.

If the only way to obtain the optional information on the dash is to start upgrading various parts of the car (infotainment + other modules/components etc.) then no doubt it's going to be expensive in which case I won't bother but I will wait until someone can confirm what's possible.

I do want to have a towbar fitted in the near future and know that the car did not come from the factory with towbar preparation so is that also likely to require some sort of upgrade to achieve the functionality?

Thanks again chaps,

Gary

Hi Gary,

it's all beyond me, software and hardware.

Perhaps a search on the existing/previous threads/forms here might already have the info, or putting up a thread here with a more specific thread title to attract those more specific to the subject.

All the details of the dot matrix are in the Driver's Handbook (whatever it's called), it's display on my wife's car at least is set via the menus in the infotainment screen/buttons.  To scroll through the dot matrix display you use the scroll wheel on the steering wheel.

I don't know but can't imagine how you'd operate the programs even if they are dormant and hidden but I don't do any computer games so have no idea of alternative settings.

I'd imagine there would be secondhand infotainment units available with the extra buttons but how much that'd help I wouldn't know.

That's me out of ideas, sorry.

forgot the 'not' as in don't

FWIW there's a "Swing" infotainment in my Rapid, and it has all the display options our Fabia SE has, except they are sequenced with the button on the end of the indicator.

Attached are some pix  - it may be worth comparing with yours.

A very long press on the top right "setup" hard button gets you to these menu options.

From the Status of MU the only ones that returned a value gave 7080.

The person most likely to know what is needed and how to do it is @pab567

Regards

John H

P.S. Also, it's possible the display area between the dials on the "S" is lacking - it certainly was with the MK2 Fabia

I did wonder about @pab567 on the Bolero update thread but didn't know how far wide his expertise might be.

I had to look up MU!

VIN?

  • Author

Hi pab567,

Which part of the vin do you need please or is it simply the registration number of the car?

Do you also need a full autoscan from VCDS to determine what modules etc. are fitted?

Thank you,

Gary

You can send the whole VIN using PM (private message on this site) to pab567 if you are unhappy about posting it on an open forum.

AS I understand it the full build specification of the individual car can be obtained from the VIN. - including options and modules fitted.

Hi johnh510,

Thanks for your reply I have sent the details to pab567 and await his response on how to proceed.

Cheers,

Gary
