kodiaq 1.5TSI: wise choice?

I'd like to buy a Kodiaq for the family - seems the best value for the space it offers. Diesel is France is probably not the best choice in this moment so...what about the 1.5 TSI DSG?

 

My mileage is about 12-14.000/year, 60% motorway, 25% national roads, 15% mountain - practically no city. Motorways trips are > 500km, fully loaded 

 

My main concern is about fuel consumption ..can you please provide some real L/100km?

Without knowing how hard you drive the car, and what you mean by "Fully Loaded" it's difficult, but I say you are looking at around 35mpg.

 

I've very little conception of your metric, but a quick google suggests it is 6.72

Fully loaded = 4 people and luggage 

No sporty drive, I don't care driving fast (I stick to speed limits) 

 

Mpg is confusing since you have UK and US Mpg, I'm never sure to what you refer to :p

Do not dismiss the 2.0 TSi - my experience is that it is far more economical in the real world, if driven with restraint and common sense, than the 'official' figures. It will also give you all of the performance any sane person would need, even when fully-loaded.

 

And remember: the relatively small differences in fuel consumption are second order compared to the overall running cost of the car ie depreciation, insurance, servicing etc

Around town with one person the small engines definitely give better fuel economy while having perfectly fine pickup, but with any reasonable load especially at higher speeds the 2.0 TSI feels more secure and effortless while not having nearly as much of an economy deficit as one may think. 

This may or may not help but we have a 1.4tsi 4x4 5 seat that we collected second hand in May and recently did a trip from Sheffield to Belfast with four people and the boot and car fully loaded.  The trip took us over the Pennines and then on A roads and ultimately motorway and the car managed about 36 UK mpg on that run.  Yes it felt 'loaded' going up the A537 Cat and Fiddle but that's not surprising given how steep that road is and it was very stable on the A roads and motorway despite being loaded.  Sure the 2.0 would be better but I was pleasantly surprised.

 

Then this last weekend I did a cross country run from Sheffield to Keele and back two up.  I didn't hang about and again was surprised but how well the car could be hustled along at a decent lick.  I was followed by a new Ford Mustang for a long time and the state of the roads meant he was constantly dropping back until a long decent straight with a good surface opened up at which point he easily reeled me in but again I was surprised.  The car managed just over 38 UK mpg on that trip.

 

Longer steady motorway runs have managed just over 40 uk mpg.

 

Yes I'd like a 2.0 but all in all for a small engine in a big car the 1.4 does well and I'd expect a 1.5 to be similar and possibly better if its just fwd.  In fact a 1.4 with a remap to 180 ish bhp would be an interesting alternative...   I just need to convince SWMBO.

Just posted on another thread ... but I have been getting very good MPG even fully load - 40-45MPG

 

I looked long and hard at diesels across Skoda and other brands - live in London (ULEZ nightmare) - finally decided on a petrol and wanted 7 seats - we do low mileage (7.9k per year). Looked at 2.0 Litre and thought mmmm....18 stone extra weight of 4 x 4 and more potential problems down the line. Do I really need 4 x 4. So only way to decide is to test drive.

 

Spent about 3 minutes in a automatic 1.5 petrol and ... no brainer, so surprised with the power, cylinder shut off, economy, etc. Have come from grunty high litre diesel and this does not disappoint - best car I have owned. Last week I had 5 x adults (all over 6 foot - yes we are a tall family!!) and 2 x kids in the boot - no problem whatsoever. 

 

I'm still being ribbed about having a Polo sized engine in my car ... but test drive it and you'll be somewhat surprised like me.

I’ll certainly consider it next time round.

 

2023 - if I don’t extend this low mileage lease for extra time.

@plutus just allow for the fact that UK motorway speed limits are 112kph (70mph) unlike French autoroutes 130kph when looking at UK consumption figures being given.

 

 

@plutusUnlikely anyone refers to US Gallons concerning Skoda models as they are not sold in the US.

1 Imperial Gallon = 4.546 litres.   

(No fuel is sold in Gallons in the UK and has not been for many years.

 

1 US Gallon = 3.785 litres.
