Yes, it depends on the engine.

The front brake discs will have a diameter of either 288mm or 312mm depending on the build code.

Build Code: 1ZE

288mm

Build Code: 1LJ or 1ZA

312mm

http://www.oemepc.com/skoda/part_single/catalog/sk/markt/CZ/modell/SUP/year/2012/drive_standart/632/hg_ug/615/subcategory/615030/part_id/2550123/lang/e

Take a photo of your white build code label/sticker (in the boot area) as that might show a 1ZE, 1LJ, or 1ZA build code. Not all build codes are shown on the white build code label in the boot so it might not show any of these build codes.

Alternatively, measure the diameter of the front discs or check if a 15" wheel will fit over the front brake calipers. If a 15" wheel will fit over the front brake calipers it means that you have the 288mm diameter front brake discs as a 15" wheel won't fit over the brake calipers on the larger 312mm diameter front brake discs.

15" wheels are not type approved for the Superb 2.

The Skoda online parts catalogue refers to the 288mm diameter front discs on the Superb MK2 as being suitable for 15" wheels.

Perhaps, but the list of type approved wheel sizes only lists 16" and higher for the Superb 2.

Brake calipers/systems tend to be described in terms of the smallest wheel they can fit inside; which isn't necessarily a size of wheel that they are used with on a given model.

If you look in the parts catalogue for wheels for Superb 2, you'll see that 16" is the smallest listed @Carlston, unless I'm being blind.

There can be big savings on the 195/65R15 size over the 205/55R16 size when it comes to winter tyres. Some insurance companies don't charge extra, because a narrower tyre doesn't increase performance.

That's irrelevant! The manufacturer has specified 16" as the minimum, end of discussion.

Wow, what a rubbish way of saying "thanks Chimaera and Wino for setting me straight". :D

@Carlston

Did you not check what Skoda gave as the size of wheels / tyres suitable for fitting Snow Chains to?

195/65R15 6Jx15 ET43 from the Octavia MK3 would also work with snowchains on the Superb MK2 (provided the front brake discs don't have a diameter larger than 288mm).

For at least 15 years the insurance companies were TOLD that they do not charge extra for winter tyres/wheels as long as the wheels andtyres are o.k. for the model.

That is not correct. They were approved for some early 1.9 diesels, and maybe also for the 1.6 successor?

The versions with larger engines (1.4 TSI, 2.0 TDI and up) have 312 mm front brakes and need at least 16".

Please show me the page in the parts catalogue for Mk2 Superb where there's a 15" wheel? The choices are all here: wheels, brakes Superb (SUP) [EUROPA 2008 year] (7zap.com)

Carlston was not telling anybody to drive on 15" wheels, (and for the record I would be happy to) he suggested using a 15" rim as a go-no/go guage to see what size brake disc was fitted.

I'm going by the service manual, which does not list any approved size below 16" for any model in any production year.

I may have to correct myself: After some more digging around it looks like my memory let me down on this one. The 15" wheels did fit on the mentioned models, but it looks like they were never officially approved by Skoda. I know however of quite a few people who did use their old 15" winter wheels (195/65R15) on these models without issues.

I thought the early 1.9 and all 1.4 versions came with Spectrum 16" alloys as standard
