About hydraulic lifters

Featured Replies

Is it true that if i remove the hydraulic  lifters  of my old engine, i must install them in the same position?

Not because the wear pattern, but due the oil charge status inside them to match the valve height

Not if you compress them in a vice to squeeze out all the oil before refitting them.

I've never heard that one before. I'd advise refitting used tappets (solid or hydraulic) and rocker arms in the same positions because of wear patterns though.

Ok, thank you for the answers.

And now that you mention, new lifters come compressed.

What about when i install used one, filled with oil and stuck...?

It's what the mechanic did because he tought it would work

If you install old lifters that are still full of oil or stuck you risk losing compression and burning the valve seats, they might unstick themselves but it's very bad practice.

We ran the engine for like one mi ute with that situation.

Do you think....?

No, I don't, it's just sloppy, not dangerous.

In fact I think that's your mechanics new nickname, if he was one of the seven dwarves he'd be Sloppy.

For sure es 🤣🤣.

So, do you think that i dont have to worry for permanent damage after running the car idle for one minutes with old fill with oil and stuck lifters?

Also @Kharl if they unstick and aren't actually bent that is. Because for sure they won't unbend themselves.

I agree

No, because the difference in height between lifters is fractions of a millimetre, enough to stop a valve from seating properly but not enough to cause interference.

Ohh that is why i heard a noise f air in reverse in the air intake.

So, luckly, i just need to get new quality lifters and thats it?

No, I doubt your old lifters are damaged.

No, i mean the engine and valves, i dont care about the old lifter, all i want is my engine back safe and sound.

Do a compression test if you're worried.

Compression test?  Maybe the dealer has that simply tool.

But at your knowledge, for running the engine a minute with the old stuck lifters, could that have caused major damages?

No, I already said it couldn't cause any damage.

Good morning.

Question.

Are the TDI hydraulic lifters the same for the SDI?

Someone told me to avoid Topran brand, and those are the only available in thia country.

But i got some  from another quality brand (dont remember) but the seller says it is for he TDI

  • Author

Yea, i find in OSCARO they are different

  • Author

Even the dealer says they never bring the lifters...

Oh wao

  • Author

In this country  they insist tdi and sdi can use the same lifters even when the internal height  of the part that face to the valve is diferent and the part number is different too...

What an odyssey

I'd doubt it; check whether or not the camshafts themselves have different part numbers. I don't have a parts catalogue but I've a suspicion they will due to different base circles and/or ramps, and/or lifts.
