Front Brake Caliper - 280

Featured Replies

Are the front brake calipers on the 280 a single or dual pot unit?

No one?

I had a quick glance, definitely sliding caliper, can't see why they would have gone dual pot on one side. It's not really track focussed at point if sale and the brakes will trigger ABS ie. provide enough force to lock the fr wheels.  Lots of Golf R aimed upgrades out there which may fit?

Thanks Wino and Chazzy.

Hmmmm. So the same single pot brake calipers are used on a 1.4 Kodiaq (and no doubt others) and a 280? I raised the question following driving on one long downhill stretch of road, and there was definitely brake fade, which was quite worrying. I note the Mk7 R has practically the same caliper.. well, it’s a single pot floating unit, which I’d doubt is any more effective.

I’ll investigate options for replacements.

The size of the caliper and how many pistons it has won’t effect brake fade.

it will be the size of the disc, cooling capabilities and quality of discs and pads.

As has been discussed before, you could change the disc to a 340mm, (which is the largest you can fit without any other modifications) from the Golf Clubsport or Audi S3?, part number 5Q0615301C.

Must be a hell of a hill to get brake fade.

A better caliper won't do anything to fix it though as already mentioned. Start with pads, fluid, maybe brake hose.

Yep. I noticed it at the bottom of the very long down hill section of the A6 Glen Shane Road, going from Derry to Belfast, between the Ponderosa and Oak Leaf restaurants. It drops about 800 feet in 3 miles. Having read all your suggestions, I guess it could be hot fluid related rather than a mechanical problem, as a couple of miles on and it had gone.
