Problems with my Fabia TDI - Perhaps??

Featured Replies

couple of issues i'd like clarified with my PD100 TDI Fabia.

Most of my driving is in a city with the odd motorway run at weekends, currently I get about 330 miles to a tank and the trip computer shows an average of 44mpg, however I hear reports esp on this forum of those with VRS's getting 50+mpg in town and about 450 miles to a tank, now considering this has a thirstier & more powerful engine how is this the case or is my fabia got a problem!

Other thing is when cruising in 5th about 30-40mph the car seems to accelerate by itself to the point where I have to apply brakes or change back to 4th. Is this just the nature of the drive by wire system or a potential problem?

driving away on its own is normal , if your doing a lot of stop/start town driving i think your fuel consumption will be pretty poor compared with doing motorway driving , try turning the car off if your stationary for any length of time this should save some fuel , correct tyre pressures , fresh air filter , smooth driving , i.e no harsh braking/accelerating will also make consumption figures better

so what causes this drive away by itself problem anyway and why only in 5th?

its not a problem , and it will do it in 4th aswell , its due to the torque of the engine and the engine management , all your doing is allowing the car to drive on tickover and due to the torquey nature of the diesel engine it wont stall like a petrol engined car will/may do

When I got rid of my Fabia PD100 at 53000 miles, it was returning 60 mpg in all but the worst winter weather. But then I avoid town driving whenever possible and tried to maintain steady rather than spectacular progress. Sounds like yours may be a little thirsty.

Try putting a clean air filter in it, gained me 10MPG on my Octy TDI.

Also ignore the suggested air filter change and do it every 10k or year.

Dont drive 30 mph in 5th !!! It wont be good for mpg or engine or anything.

cheers for the replys guys, qst diesel ive had so this prob explains a few things.

also thought that it was best to drive in as high a gear as you could but possibly not in this case, maybe leave 5th for the motorways or 40+ roads.

My wife's Fabia PD100 estate is getting roughly about the same mpg as you are.

Her driving is nearly all in town with short stop/start journeys so it's not the best conditions for a diesel & I don't expect much more really.

I'm not sure but I also suspect that the estate may be slightly heavier than other Fabias which won't help the fuel consumption either.

Or maybe it's just all this Edinburgh traffic we have to contend with up here ! :D

i'd agree with the edinburgh traffic, it's murder & causes a noticible mpg difference at different times of the day as well.

when travelling to work I can get an average 45-50 but coming home it's only 30-35 although overall per tank my average is about 44.

I average 17 mph on the way home from work (about 11 miles) and the car averages 38mpg. I dont think thats too bad considering the traffic jams. My 2.0 VW Bora averaged 19 mpg on the same route!!

I think that those who quote 50mpg for town driving are only taking the

figure from the onboard computer ...... if you are getting 330 miles from a tank

then I would suggest your true mpg is around 35 to 38 mpg ........

I have had my vRS for 12 months now and mostly my monthly driving consist

of 2 miles to work in traffic then ditto going home then weekends 20 miles

country roads driving ......... during the week I usually take it for a 10 mile

run to clean out the system I always fill the tank including the expansion tank

and check the mpg by LTs and mileage .... this to my mind is the only way to

have an accurate mpg figure

to check this out .... fill your tank.... note your mileage .... do say 200 miles or

so then fill your tank to the same level note your mileage again convert your

LTS to gallons then divide your mileage by the gallons and that will give you

a more accurate mpg ..... I am getting around 33 to 38 mpg most fill ups

but on a recent 300 mile motorway journey got 44mpg driven at around the

NSL ;)

I can usually get by with 1 fillup a month unless I do a trip somewhere

so far had 11 fillups in 12 months

MPG

month 1 33.36 still playing

month 2 30.47 ditto

month 3 37.84 driving more sensible :)

month 4 38.82

month 5 39.92

month 6 36.48

month 7 36.89

month 8 32.63

month 9 35.16

month 10 43.88 a trip up the motorway

month 11 37.45

It's most likely your driving style. My missus struggles to get 42-43 in mine round town wheras I almost always get over 50 - use overrun, brake nice and early (and gently) and don't accelerate hard - there's no pint when the next set of lights is always red!

Another tip is never accelerate toward a red light, be it a traffic or brake light it'll cost you in fuel - by being gentle and responding to things in good time you can avoid stopping for the most part - that makes a big difference.

also thought that it was best to drive in as high a gear as you could but possibly not in this case, maybe leave 5th for the motorways or 40+ roads.

3rd for 30 and 4th for 40mph will give you the best available engine braking and responsiveness imho on the 5-speed box. According to my spreadsheet, my PD100 averaged 48.4mpg over the 27403.5 miles (15 months!) I owned it for with the worst (at the pump) mpg being 43.8 mpg and the best being 56.2mpg. My commute takes in driving in heavy traffic and then fast A and B roads :D

As said above, try a new air filter and it may also be worth giving the car a "high-speed" blast if it spends all its time in town :D

Well for my PD100 TDI estate I'm getting around 56 mpg based on how much fuel it takes to top up to full against millage. Trip computer says 52mpg. This after 13000 miles and based on around 350 miles a week (200 motorway).

Are you driving with the air-con switched on or off? My VRS is noticeably less economic with the air-con switched on.

My PD100 will achieve over 70mpg if I'm careful with it on a long run, and about 45mpg around town. I'd say that's typical. Remember a lot of definitions for 'town' exist. Around here it's up and down hills, traffic lights and roundabouts literally every 100 yards. Some places it can be a 30mph road on the flat for a mile before a set of lights, at even at 30mph, just that stretch of road will significantly alter your average mpg as you're not accelerating or decelerating.

I wil back these figures up. I get roughly 50mpg at 80 on a good motorway run, 45 if i really nail it!! Which I dont obviously!! If i do 70 its close to 60mpg.

Around town prob 45-48mpg just depends on how much stop, starting etc.

At around 11 500 miles she is costing me about 8p a mile to run!!

air con is off, guess i'll change my driving style and watch what gears driving in etc and monitor the sitiuation

thanks for all the replys

Motorway speed makes a massive difference! I drive about 70 miles on motorways every day in mine and my observations are:

55-60mph tootling - 70mpg+ (have seen in excess of 76mpg on one occasion, but I reckon I had a tailwind)

70mph - 60mpg

80mph - 50mpg

The Furby is far from aerodynamic . . . .

To be honest a lot of you problems are down to your gear selection. The PD100 works at its best and most economical in the approximate revs of about 1800-2800 so suggest using 3rd go upto 30-35 4th only only 35mph and fifth for 45mph. Otherwise the turbo is doing little and its staring a lot of other parts.
