Starting problems Skoda Octavia 2.0tdi 2017

Featured Replies

Hey guys, i have a starting problem with my octavia 2.0tdi 2017 DSG6.

Somethimes starts after 2 or 3 tries (first try rpms just go to 800 and immediatelly drop).

I went to the official dealer and they didnt find any errors on diagnostics.

They fixed starter motor and installed new battery and all was good for a month. Again occasionally i started to notice same problem. Yesterday i went again to official dealer and they said everything is fine and no errors showed up in diagnostics. They said they checked electronics, engine, dsg, alternator and again starter motor and battery and everything is normal. The car runs great. I bought it 3 months ago and it was fully serviced by offical dealers.

Did anyone else had same issue?

So - as I understand things - its takes 2 or 3 goes to start the car.  My first go-to - would be the glow-plugs.  You don't say how many miles/kms your car has done, but the glow-plugs will probably need replacing after about 120,000 kms/80,000miles [its good practice anyhow].  Other things to look at:

  • Fuel Filters - when were they last done?  They can get easily blocked - a good/simple job to be done.
  • Fuel Pump - the CANBUS network will report low pressure on the incoming fuel line - it would be good to get a diagnostic readout anyway.
  • Non-return valve - usually associated with the Fuel Pump - it might take some cranking to get the fuel pump to get the fuel into the injectors.

What is the performance of the car like?  If it is sluggish, then I suggest low fuel pressure or pump issues.

Do you also have any electrical devices plugged into your car?  It is worth disconnecting these and seeing if this improves matters [I am thinking dash cams - with should be NOT be connected to permanent live, but to switched live].  The Octavias/Golf's - do not like low battery voltages (but again, this situation would be reported and you will get random error messages all over the place).

sorry i forgot to mention It starts first try in the morning when its cold , and sometimes takes two , three times to  start when its hot .

Car has 148 000km .

last service was done on 143 000km  . Fuel filter, oil filer and oil was changed.

i dont have any electrical devices pluged in .

The car is running great its not sluggish or anything like that .

new battery was installed one month ago and starter motor was refurbished.

the car has full service history.

I would look at getting an ODBEleven dongle to help diagnostics:

Sounds like a failure for either the Fuel Pump or non-return valve.

If fuel pump or non-return valve is failing will it show on diagnostics?

Skodas official dealership and service did diagnostics 3 times already and not a single one error showed.

Not necessarily - you might get a low pressure warning on CANBUS, but if the issue is that it only effects the car on cold first start, then it may produce an error - which is automatically cleared.

One other thing that might cause cranking issues - is the timing belt.  If your timing belt is not 100% and the car is having to adjust the timing within tolerances, then it will also take longer to start.

When was the last time the belt was changed?

Only problem is when car is hot. On cold start it starts almost immediatelly.

I think timing belt is original (from factory) i didnt change it.

Okay....then might I suggest you get the timing belt looked at - as a matter of urgency (massively overdue). You might have an engine with a stretched belt which when hot is causing the timing to go out of tolerance.

Isnt it supposed to change on 210 000km?

Five years old....the car is over five years old and the timing belt needs replacing irrespective of mileage. Sorry. ..

Isn't it only Skoda UK that claims a 5 year belt change is essential? Other countries take a less cautious approach.

Not sure how a 2017 car can be massively overdue on even a 5 year interval?

Sounds more like an electrical power/charging problem if a new battery fixed the problem for a month.

Try jump starting it with another car's battery connected, when hot, and see if that helps.

I canny count... apologies. Okay, so it's 4 years from 2017 to 2021. I think that the OP needs to at least check the belt to make sure it's not stretching when hot. At 96k miles or 140k Kms, you are getting to that point that it needs looking at. All depends on the history of the car and how well it is looked after too.

New battery? I had the same problems, but after a battery change, it starts like a clock each time.

Was the battery management system updated using a diagnostic tool (e.g. VCDS) that a new battery was installed?

If the battery was the same type (AGM/EFB) and the same capacity (Ah) all that needs to be done is to change one digit in the serial number field.

Authorized Skoda service changed the battery. They probably did it. I really dont know.

see this youtube video which describes your problem exactly, cold start OK, warm start bad - possible VVT issues

Hello, did you find the problem with the warm start? I have the same problem, Octavia 2.0 TDI DSG6 2017.

  • 11 months later...

Hi. Did this fault ever get resolved? I appear to have the same symptoms.

Starter brushes and glow plugs. So far so good for me.
