That's what I'm running, an i7-2600k. I got it cheap (£60ish) and it runs all the games I need it to coupled with a GTX950 I got for free off a mate.

  • I've been using 11 since I was able to get it on developer preview. I absolutely love it, I am really impressed. I found it simple and intuitive, the only thing I found frustrating was the start menu

  • Seems avoidable.

Considering this laptop cost me nearly £1,300 in January, I'd like to f****** hope so!

I don't know but it'll exclude a heck of a lot of gamers with self-builds if Windows 11 requires a TPM module.

Some motherboards do have them, and some others have a TPM header to add a TPM module. They're currently about £15, get them before they skyrocket in this age of shortages and price-gouging.

TPM is called something different in some MOBOs, many people have bought the modules only to find they already have it.

I know on my Gigabyte its a case of altering the UEFI CSM & legacy states under "win 8 features" in the BIOS.. However my i7-4790 Haswell CPU isn't supported/compatible as of yet...Not worried but Win10 support ends in 2025...so will have to build a new computer by then!!

My i7-2600k isn't supported either. It'll be a miracle if my computer is about by 2025*! :D

*not saying that they don't build 'em like they used to, but my 1995 Toshiba Satellite T2130CT laptop (among other Toshiba laptops I have accumulated of a similar vintage) is working very well to this day.

Some of us are not too bothered. My Mobo etc was bought before Maplin went under and met the Grim reaper of high street stores. It meets a lot of specs, but I think It'll still be booting when boot hill summons me. The W+ W10 upgrade might be a nice inheritance for one of the kids/grandkids. So I think I'll download the W11 upgrade and keep it on disc. That way I can let them get back at the stealers at MS.

I'm on my fourth mobo for this system now. The first and third both met a horrible death when I had two PSUs go. The second got repurposed and is going up for sale soon, and the fourth lives in the computer currently. Hoping it lasts this time :D

Possibly same number of MOBOS  on this system. Same problem with PSU and on board regulators. But I can see a long install time in future and other problems as I run old software that only likes XP ,and on a second HDD I run W10, INSTALLED ON AN OLD COPY OF w7,via a free update from MS. SO now ,for a clean instal, I'd have to partition both HDD, then install XP on the small HDD, then partition the big HDD for w7 and a store. Then install W7, and from previous problems install all the stuff that works with W7, authenticate it ,install W10 , AND THEN INSTALL w11.

IS MS new CEO HAVING A NEW gIRAFFE?

Edited by VWD

I've got computers of varying ages for old software. I inherited my late father's 2005 iQon desktop which runs Windows XP and is one of my favourites for sentimental reasons, a 1998 Fujitsu beige box for DOS/Windows 98 stuff, my Great Grandmother's 1995 Toshiba T2130CT too for W3.1 and 95.

Given the username I think you'll be fine, but if you have an AMD system i'd advise not "upgrading". Win 11 scheduler has been 'aided' in its development by Intel, also known as intel up to their old tricks again. Currently slows AMD systems down between 15% and 80% (!) vs Windows 10.

I've no intention of updating but just to confirm @robt100...   The pc you built us last year...   You'd suggest not updating to W11 and to stick with 10?

Merely a username I gave myself on computer building forums. It's a Core i7-10750H so I should be fine.

For now, yes, stick with Win 10. I don't think the issue is as bad with the CPU you have, but best to play it safe till it is resolved.

As usual with windows, it alternates good-bad-good-bad with its releases, Win 7 was good, Win 8 was bad, win 10 good, so win 11....well, you can see the pattern;)

Thanks...   And yes I hate 8 on the laptop we inherited earlier this year even if it does help having a second PC around.

Got this, if you look at the little icons on the right then you'll also see that you get a little blue thing instead of the other colours used for updates. :)

I'll be doing a motherboard, CPU, memory upgrade and installing a seriously large hard drive in conjunction with a 2Tb SSD drive, the DVD writers will be staying as will the Creative Z sound card.

CPU is probably going to be an AMD RYZEN 9 series, looking at 5950X, 32Gb RAM for flexibility.

Man after my own heart. I don't think my Creative Labs Audigy 2ZS will fare too well however as I had enough problems getting it running under W10. Had it in every daily since my first PC experience. Don't quite want to stop using it.

The standard hard drive I'm looking at is 14Tb. Got a lot of music, DVD etc.

Got two Pioneers for DVD/Blu Ray discs and a multi card reader in the 3.5" Bay.

A new PSU is also required so looking for a Gold Standard 900W or 1Kw one for redundancy.

I don't think I'm looking forward to Windows 11 to be honest. I didn't look forward to Windows 10 either and I still don't like. I'm only using it because I have to! :D

I always loved XP since that's what I grew up using, except Mac OS 9.2 and OS X. I was also quite partial to Windows 7, particularly for the Aero theme.

I too liked XP and still use my Win7 laptop most of the time. When I shopped for a new laptop a number of years back (needed one as I forgot I had left my HP Pavillion XP laptop open and the sun put it to an early grave)

I asked for Vista and the girl said that that had been superceeded by Win7. A lucky escape there I think.

A lucky escape missing out on Win8 and 8.1 too.

I'm not very technical minded with computing.

I,m having problems with my Windows 10, or the laptop it is on. I will start another thread for advice on this. Hopefully some of you guys will look out for it and advise if you can.

I've still got XP on a Dell Latitude that I got for the grand total of... a quid. I have fond memories of surfing the 'net on Windows 98 around 2008/2009 when I was allowed "computer time" at my Grandad's when I'd go there for my tea when my Mum was working.

I'll keep an eye out for your W10 technical advice thread, @Tilt. I'll advise where I can too. :)

I have used every windows operating system right back from Windows 95 right up to my current Windows 11 installation, only one I didn’t take to or use much was Vista.

I must say I am loving Windows 11, I find very similar to the Mac system, being able to add all you icons to the bottom toolbar, cantered like the Mac.

Willing to offer any advice that I can, must say I am more computer savvy that I am my Karoq’s Amundsen unit which is giving me a right headache

I'm downloading Windows 11 to my laptop right now as I send this message. Wish me luck! :D

I do wish you luck, I assume you did all the checks with Microsoft to see if your pc will run Windows 11.

The tests on mine actually failed my high end ASUS ROG laptop saying my processor was not supported, but a quick hack in the registry and installed no problem and has been fine since, get all the updates automatically.

hope yours goes smoothly, it will give you the option to uninstall and go back to your old system if you keep the files, but once happy with it get rid of the old system files, they take up a lot of room.

Thanks for the tips, I'm on an OMEN 15 that I bought a year ago in January. I usually delete the old system files when upgrading, usually from W7 to W10 on custom built machines for friends and family. :)

Hell of a wait, aye? It must be bad when I'm looking at replacement cars. :D
