new E10 Fuel and Economy

Featured Replies

Tank half empty in my MY19 1.0 DSG Karoq, at last actually managed to find some 99 RON petrol (recommended in a recent thread) at a big Tesco In Harlow yesterday, so filled up.  I'm sure the engine is even a little smoother already.  (Too early to say of course to be honest & also if it is improving fuel consumption).  Actually, economy going to Harlow by motorway on E10 95 RON, even with a long fast steepish M25 climb up to the Epping Tunnel, was significantly better by 5mpg (45mpg on 30min run) than on a probably overall flatter shorter return by A Road (also 30mins) on the mixed fuel, but there was some stop / start pottering around the town & after.  E5 99 RON v E10 95 RON -  wonder which will eventually prove to give better mpg, bearing in mind conflicting reports here about the latter - I hadn't noticed any mpg reduction with E10 95 RON over the older variety recently, but can't say for sure - car runs perfectly OK on E10.

Quick question - can anyone tell me what the Future of "Super Unleaded" is?

I only use Super (Usually Tesco Momentum) and I know at the moment it's still E5 - are the intentions to leave this be?

Recall it is due to be around for a couple more years yet. Ethanol raises octane rating naturally which can mean oil companies can using even crappier petroleum and mix with the ethanol to bring it up to the required octane.  Government is raking it in with the high oil prices and the poorer fuel consumption of E10 over E5 due to lower calorific value and some drivers switching to 97 to 99 octane super unleaded again means a larger tax take so they seem happy to continue as is and did not even raise the excise duties on any of the fuels from the current 58p a litre.

Trying to use my Zoe where I can but my first fuel tank of E10 seem to being OK in the TCE Clio so it looks like the engines Engine Management Unit is coping with it as I am still getting the 680 mile range from its 10 gallon tank though I have seen more like over 600 miles on occasions but then I have been taking a passenger.  Even HMRC say you can claim 5p a miles for a passenger and not pay tax on it.    I seen shortages of E10 in some gas stations as it seems clear some drivers are trying it as well as the regular users.  Been a few years since I had cars that needed it ie twin-charge Fabia and Mk 1 Octavia VRS but the occasional E5 half or full tankful seems a fair idea if it is the Tesco variety rather than Shell that costs a fortune,

If it's the TCe 90 or 100 engine also found in the Sandero and Duster, then I can confirm that these have a sticker on the filler cap saying they can run either E5 or E10.

Yes it is a TCE 90 a 2014 Clio Nav S, so the 17 inch wheels do not help but look good.

One car rag did report a 10% fall in the mpg but that sounded extreme and has in an even older ie 2012 TCE I think.

Car is due a service in a fortnight and will make sure it gets a new air filter which is a doddle to do if the garage does not do as part of their A minor service which I think is just oil and inspection.

Air filter is only £8 so will pick one up and fit it, anything to help fuel consumption with fuel being so expensive.

My Grandad's Sandero is of the same year and engine. He's been running E10 in it and hasn't noticed any difference really.

Well as previously posted I had drop in fuel economy from range of over 400 miles down 360 ish. But now back to over 400 miles. Back to using E5, ie Tesco momentum 99 Ron. Bit more expensive but to me it's worth it.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been comparing Tesco E10 and 99 RON over last few weeks on long (>100 mile) trips. There's no discernible difference in eco, I'm getting 39 - 44 from both fuels. How I drive, and the prevailing wind has a much bigger impact on the outcome
