Did I get a good deal?

Featured Replies

Hi, used car market is very strange this year and I’ve always wondered if I got a good deal and be intrigued to get your thoughts.

Always wanted a vrs and after there being pretty much nothing in my county one came up at a dealer half a mile away in April, 67 plate vrs tsi manual blue 230, no heated seats but in pretty much perfect condition with only 3k miles on clock and 1 previous owner.

Drove great so bit the bullet and paid £17k. Hope I didn’t pay too much although prices now look crazy!

So long as you’re happy with the deal that’s all that matters.

I try not to over-think these things, especially afterwards..

In what colour?

When I was looking meteor grey ones always seemed to command more of a premium. .

But I had my heart set on that colour. .

Had mine 3 months to the day now. . Paid 20k -68 plate tsi 245 dsg 24k miles on the clock.

I would say what you have paid in the current climate of second hand cars is very reasonable.

Just in racing blue. Wasn’t my first choice of colours but knew I couldn’t be too picky on that as the vrs so rarely comes up in my part of the country.

Photos please....

Racing blue. I have one in that colour. Definitely the fastest colour out of all the colours 🤣

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Used car prices are completely nuts at the moment.

I paid 20k for a 2018 VRS 245 in Meteor Grey with 18k miles a month ago, but I was trying to find one for about 3 months or so. Petrol VRS is quite rare here. In 3 months there was only this one and a 230 in green that came up for sale.

Typically there is 2 for sale right now but 1 is a 230 and it’s black, I hate black cars. My old car was black and I hated the colour having had a black car before but sucked it up as I wanted a VRS and that one was the best deal at the time. The other one is a 2018 245 like mine but it has 25k miles and it’s red and is sitting at £23,595 at the local dealers. I much prefer the one I got. I really like the Meteor Grey.

I did get a much better deal trading in my 2015 diesel VRS than I thought I would because of the way used cars have went up in price. Got a fair bit more than I paid for it only a year ago.

I knew at the time I was probably paying over the odds but I don’t even care it was exactly the car I wanted and the extra money I got for my old car helped take the sting out of it a bit.

My old 2015 diesal VRS with 48k miles is currently up for sale at the place I traded in to for £14,595. I paid £9750 for it pretty much exactly a year ago.

Couple of pictures here. Do sometimes check auto trader and barely seen any in my region (Norfolk) since I bought mine.

I am happy with the vrs, like to think I did get a good deal but been such a funny year for used car market it’s hard to know.

I got a deal then, 2 years ago, a 68 plate VRS on 8k miles for £18,800 - The salesman showed me the Glass guide thing that they'd give more than that to take it as a part ex. I got a tank of fuel too. Depreciation must be pretty low at the moment because used prices are so good. Sometimes a dealer just wants rid of a car, Skoda was traded at a Honda dealership and they didn't know what to do with it.

There is no such thing as depreciation at the moment the value of all used cars has went through the roof due to all of the issues with availability of new cars, huge demand because people have extra cash reserves after not spending, no holidays etc because of the pandemic. Add to that a lot of people wanting to change cars but not wanting hybrid or electric vehicles as well.

Like I mentioned above this time last year I paid £9750 for a 2015 Diesal Vrs with 35k miles. When I traded it in I got £12,250 and it now has 48k miles, the alloys need refurbed thanks to the wife using it for a few weeks and has a dent in one of the rear quarter panels. It is now up for sale for £14,595.

Your car is likely worth more than you paid for it as well. My neighbour has a Volkswagen something or other he took it in for a trade in valuation last week they offered him £200 less than he paid for it 5 years ago. Used car values have gone through the roof.

Even more so here in N.I. Here a lot of cars are sold to people who are taking them to be registered in the republic. If it’s an English plate they have to pay 26% tax or something ridiculous, there is a lot of English reg cars here. If it’s a N.I plate they don’t have to pay tax, because of Brexit. That has also pushed up the value of used cars here that have an N.I reg.

I guess it’s all relative really, I just checked out the motorway site and they offered £3k more for mine than I paid but if I did cash in and replaced it I would only find everything else has gone up too so I’d still be looking at cars in the same bracket.

But if you can cash out now and don’t need a car or can wait the 6-12 months for it to calm down then all power to you!

Yeah its the classic price to trade. Like the house situation. "My house has gone up by XX thousand, let's sell up and move now.  Oh have you seen how much the new place is going to cost us, it's ridiculous!!"
