office2003 / network shares

Featured Replies

Got another Query for everyone.. (or someone whos registered on experts exchange ;) )

We have been moving users over to a domain and upgrading their machines.

problem we are having is when a user tries to open/save/navigate a filestructure on a fileserver from within a office application.. eg word/excel etc.

when they try to do this it takes about 15-20seconds before they can select the drive from the dropdown at the top, and about 5 seconds to change directory.

the same navigation is lightning quick in windows explorer.

these are pretty powerful machines covering XP-w2k and office 2003/2k

Theres several cases on this on experts exchange but i dont have a subscription.. and cant find owt on google.

please help as its causing us alot of trouble especially with this being a "all new" system we are rolling out its getting alot of interest from senior managers.

thanx in advance :)

I assume you have drives mapped for all your users? If so, are all of them online and accessible?

I've had this problem too with Office 2003. Everytime you try open/save in an Office app, it checks each drive to make sure they are all accessible, if one of your drives isn't, it takes a while to figure that out before checking the next drive letter.

I move between sites, so I had drives mapped for various servers depending where I was, so quite often they weren't pointing to anything. As soon as I removed these mappings, Office went back to normal.

Hope that helps...

Also check that the users' default printer is accessible - this can slow down Office apps no end.

Thanks for the replys guys.

turns out these affected people have a "extra" network share to a server on a remote site, and it isnt always a connected drive because it uses separate username/password.

i removed this share and its working now...

Thats good, glad you got it working.

It took me ages to figure that one out when I had that problem, as earlier versions of Office aren't affected. :thumbdwn:
