Noise when breaking

Featured Replies

Hi dont know if anyone can help me I have a Skoda octavia 1.6 diesel and for the last few week sometimes when I’m breaking I get a whiring sound and a scrape this doesn’t happen all the time but once it’s started it’ll do it for about 5 minutes then stop for a while before restarting.  My son has put new disks and pads on the car along with new callipers but it’s made no difference.  Ive been to book it into the garage today and they’ve said they’ve had no idea what it could be and it would be a case of just trying new parts (and obviously a large bill) can anyone shed any light on this please

If everything is new - discs, pads and even calipers - has your son acidentally twisted the calipers on the brake hoses?

If this is from the front axle I would put the front end on exle stands and run the engine / wheels and brake trying to replicate the noise at "standstill".

Hi thanks for your reply no it’s all been checked and everything is fine it doesn’t do it all the time it starts and stops all day and only does it when I break to stop not if I’m just slowing down whilst driving

If he's done the pads and discs it's not going to be  a stone trapped by the pads. Have a look at the big metal shields behind the brake - circular in size and about the same diameter or bigger than the disc. They're cheaply made and the mounting points give up, leading to them flopping about.  Sometimes called a dust cover or brake shield.
