Taking car on holiday to Southern Ireland.

Featured Replies

I'm taking my Octy to Southern Ireland in August using the ferry. Normally I fly over and hire a car as I visit friends regularly there. Does anyone know if I need any light ajustments to drive it over there? Thanks for any info you may have.

No adjustment neccessary.

No problems driving there. Few tips - speed limits are now in kph, petrol is cheaper, Irish drivers are mad :D:D, and the road quality ranges from superb (M1 motorway to Dundalk) to :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: (some country roads).

Have been over 3 times and going again this year :):)

petrol is cheaper,

Not any more its not. We're now just as expensive as you lot.

We're not all mad, just the ones with a yellow "Taxi" sign on the top :D

Damn and blast :mad::mad::mad::mad:

You will love it friendly people roads can go from race track condition to farm track condition without any warning ive been over both to the north and the south numerous times as far down as county clare and as far north as port stewart both on motor bikes and cars cant give it a big enough thumbs up and you dont need to ajust anything the only thing i did do was inform my insurance to get a green card for the south

Hope you enjoy

Whoosh:thumbup:

Drivers aren't that mad (although it depends where you're coming from), road quality does vary, have some euro coins for tolls and petrol is still cheaper.

Oh and no need to worry about headlights same side of road. People here seem obsessed with foglights too!

Light adjustment! Sometimes I think they're not even compulsory over here.

LIGHTS! Sure why would you be drivin at night, you'll be in the pub!;):D :friday:

just make sure you've two of em and you'll be grand:thumbup:

If your stopping for petrol/ diesel, stick to the main fuel stations, laundering is rife, especially near the border.

I went for a cheap fill of diesel in the south about a year ago, and that cost me a new filter (i was lucky). A friend had a dodgy fill in a 320d BMW and had to replace the fuel pump and have the engine flushed,

Wonederful, thanks for all the tips (especially about the sticking to the main fuel stations), I've printed them off to keep!

Irish drivers are mad :D:D,

Thanks for the compliment :P

Yea be carful of the roads, they can vary a lot, be especially careful of potholes as they have a habit of no filling them  . Also take some dotted lines for overtaking with a pinch of salt, they put them in the strangest places (Michael Schumacher would dare overtake in the F1 car ;) )

Btw What part of the country are you going to ?

PS Tip of the day, check out www.irishperformancecars.com (there was a code for a motorsport discount on ferries ;) ) Although I'm not sure if you can book it from your side with it.

I am going to a wedding at the Devon Inn, somewhere near Newcastle West, and then travelling up to Connemara to take in the views.

I'll be down that neck of the woods next weekend, I've to go to a wedding in Kerry (staying in Adare the night before).

The roads to Limerick are excellent, well to Irish standards. One thing to be careful of in Limerick, especially on the route you'll be going is be carful of the road signs, for some reason they put the direction signs right at the exit so no time to react (you'll know what I mean when you see it ;) )

yeah take plenty of euro,s with you.good place 2 party. :D petrol dearer than it used 2 be. but the diesel is cheaper.:D have a nice time and watch out for the pot holes.
