the truth about electric cars

Featured Replies

The real problem with electric cars and the charging confusion is the one that nobody is actually addressing, and that is that there is NO set standards for the location of the charge port, or its type of port as this RAC guide shows, even from the early days the method of refuelling an ICE car has not really changed, its a case of pull into a filling station, opening the fuel tank flap. removing the cap and inserting the nozzle and squeezing the trigger and the process is the same regardless of what type of fuel or its grade.

Refuelling an electric is nothing like that, there are many types of plugs, types of charger, speeds, AC, or DC etc and not not all charging locations are equal, some will cater for certain types and not others.

So is it really any wonder that so many people struggle with getting charged, as this RAC site explains.

Ice vehicles have re-fuelling places on different sides of the vehicle too.

But not in the front grill

You can not go back and simplify what was before can you?   You just need to look at the model from which year and what it is.

Now it is pretty simple in the UK.

Unless you are landed with a pretty new Renault with only AC charging no DC.   Which happens.

True, but that is yet another possible reason for many people not to even consider having a EV.

I had one in the centre of the car at the back under the number plate

@Graham Butcher  there are so many reasons that people are not considering an EV be it new or used.

Lots of the reasons might be any of the things that are discussed in this thread.

There seems to be people that they suit and they can get their heads round how they work and how they will charge them.

As it is now if they get one and need to charge out and about they have little choice to get with it kind of quick.

But it is a case of keep calm and carry on, and if the Government want to price you off the road then just pay up.

VW type 1, Hillman Imp, as @Stonekeeper hints at some marks of Ford Zephyr/Zodiac... Ok, not in the grille, but in a front wing or under the rear number plate. And that's before I mention that some type 1s had the fuel filler under the front luggage cover...

Yes, the VW early beetles and the Hillman Imp were located at the front under the hood/boot lid as they both rear engined cars. All the Zephyr and Zodiacs were in the rear MK1s were next to rear number plate on the O/S and mk2, 3 and 4 were behind a flap behind the rear number plate. Humber Hawks and Supersnipes along with the Imperial where behind the O/S rear reflector, which unscrewed to refill the filler tube.

Some has 2 fuel filler on either of the rear wings or even under the front seats .

The majority of  modern ICE vehicles have the fuel filler on the rear wing  might be a more accurate statement then ;o)

Actually that takes me on to a related note:

Wonder if EVs will ever get the equivalent (admittedly not a compulsory thing and I'm sure someone will some up with a modern ICE that doesn't follow this adopted convention) marker on the dash to indicate which side the filler is?

useful but not quite the same thing ;o)

Your fuel guage indication is lovely.  Not all cars or vans have that. Not the same thing as that I posted clearly . It was not really for you. Not comparing to ICE vehicles.   This is the EV section. It is quite the same as EV,s are.   Relevent really to those taking about EV,s and charging.    Many positions not great with right hand drive cars.    Front position charge port is easy for many folks.   As long as the charger port flaps do not freeze closed.

It is surprising how many ICE owners don't realise that  the fuel gauge often has that little marker on

I am never surprised at how so many have eyesight good for driving, but for reading or close up really need large print and large symbols on buttons, switches and dash boards.

Many need reading glasses in the top of their head for when they need to see stuff from their driving position.

As to EV charging, the same goes with EV Chargers and not easy to read or see, then there is the not user friendly with cables and not pretty heavy cables tethered.

There is a huge difference between user friendly. able bodied, disabled, infirm, wheel chair or crutch users.

Some Designers / Architects think disabled friendly are dropped kerbs, some do not realise that once a charger is plugged in or started the user might need to go around the back of it.

Yup I’m a reading glasses on top of head type of guy:)

Apparently, if one plugs in to a powerful DC charger ie over 100 kws, but one only sees 35/36 kwh when one is expecting over 100 kw charging as the car is capable of over 100 kw and battery is half or less charged it means the cable cooling has failed and that is quite common, even happened on Ionity chargers which are normally quite good.

Live and learn.

Fantastic news for Sir Keir Starmer's 'Working people' who decide why should i have money in the bank and get screwed in LEZ,s & wants to go buy a cheap as chip Used EV.

The Pension Funds and Financial Establishments are the ones that have financed the EV,s and ICE Vehicles that Dealers & Traders have bought in and have in Stock,

so again that is working peoples money, because it is not the Banks or Pension Funds, it is peoples.

Doesn't that tell you that they don't want to risk the money belonging to those who could actually afford the risk for some reason?

It tells me that the system is ballesed up, bit then it always has been, keeping the Car Industry in the UK in the past. high paid jobs, and cars going to businesses ans leased and into the used trade and keep the economy going around.

Normal PAYE tax payers, small businesses and traders maybe working hard and those that can work the system doing that.

The EV Market in the UK was being manipulated and people are going to be bit in the bum.

Tax Payer public money, Joe and Jane public.

But as always there will be winners, there always is.

Was ???

Is surely ?

@Winston_Woof  'was'  as in always has been.  Pre Reg, Demonstrators, Management cars,  yes it still is being manipulated.

Now though it is clear to those very sales executives that were and are part of it, for the sales figures and their bonuses and incentives.

Like a light switch went on and now they can see what they were blind to.

Well tough titty really.

Stay away from EV,s.     Make Youtube videos, it makes sense you know.

The ZE50 interests me as it is the model that local Renault did not want back, though ok to have my mild hybrid Arkana back, as it was worth about £5k less than my PCP pay off amount, that was 3 months ago when I was doing the deal for the Scenic etech.

Roll on 3 month, and despite coming up to winter and the values are up around £11k from the £9k it was.

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?advertising-location=at_cars&aggregatedTrim=Riviera&make=Renault&model=Zoe&postcode=wr40lx&sort=relevance

Now "wise youtube men", like the self appointed expert above, seem to think those who drive EVs despair over EVs losing their value quickly overthe first 5 years or so, the truth is far from it in most case. As most EVs are on PCP a low market value can mean that the local dealer who is obliged to take back the EV after 2, 3, 4 years, is in a tough spot as is the nation marque importer.  I can easily just say "take the car back", having paid my two hundred and something pounds a month for having the car, which costs next to nothing to run and I have made money on mileage claims from HMRC or he can, and it has been intimated, he will cut me a deal on buying the car I have grown to like over the past 3, 4 years.  As Renault do not really want a car worth much less than the balloon payment, unless I do a deal for a new Renault 5 or 5 EV, which is highly likely, I understand they will offer to sell my Zoe Riviera for thousands below the balloon payment ie round about between the trade in and re-retail value.

So no, quite happy for the market value to be on the low side ie residual of around a third after 3 years but some, probably many, EVs are bouncing back in value on Autotrader and in the auction houses quite well.  Winners and losers of course as some EVs are exposed as poor value as not reaching their WLTPetc by a huge margin whilst other are seen as gems.

I'm currently over at North Weald airfield and most of those preregistered 24 plate Skodas have gone and have been replaced with even more 74 plates sitting around.

@Graham Butcher  What models of Skoda?

..................................................

£35,500 RRP 14 months ago.

In 2 years i am expecting to pay nearer £10,000 to buy one, or a 5 door petrol model.
