VRS iV ICE starting

Featured Replies

Had a strange one tonight, jumped in car pushed start, put in D and pulled away slowly and the ICE started. The car was in E mode and I had plenty of battery so why did it start.?

Was it very cold and did you have lots of 'electrical load' switched on (lights, heater, heated windows, heated seats etc.). If so then that's probably why...

It was cold, only had heating on to 22 and lights on, that’s all.

What actually was the ambient temperature?

If the requested interior temp is more than 16 degrees with pure ICE engine cars the stop / start has the engine starting.

It was 2.5 so a 19.5 difference

That's your answer then

Mine does this every now and again, it's definitely not temperature related since it doesn't do it first thing in the morning. From what I've read, the ICE will start every now and again if it's never used, this makes perfect sense to me since I drive on battery 99% of the time.

I read somewhere that PHEVs are programmed to fire up the ICE engine occasionally in the interest of keeping the ICE servicable e.g. lubricated etc.

Might also be to charge up the 12 volt battery which iirc is not charged by the plug in charger but only when the car is actually driving (electric or ICE). The ICE kicks in when SOC is too low.

The manual states that the 12v battery is charged at the same time as the main battery.

There is no regular 12V alternator with the 1.4TSI PHEV powertrain.

If the 12V battery is low starting the engine is of little use as there's no alternator. It hasn't happened on mine but I do use hybrid mode occasionally.
