Power Steering Pump Leak

Featured Replies

Good evening everyone,

I'm after coming out to my car to see a some power steering fluid on the floor.

From what I can tell its dripping from the pump area itself not the rack thankfully.

I'll be able to get a good look under it tomorrow but I want to know if there are any known trouble spots that these leak from?

Power steering was working fine but I can see it going off on me tomorrow if the level drops too low.

No, but it should be obvious, my guess is the high pressure hose leaking.

If you need a working second hand pump let me know, I have one boxed up ready to go from my vRS I stripped.

I'll keep that in mind thanks.

I do have my mk1 and all of its power steering stuff is fine, if needs be could I nick a hose off it or would they be different?

Worth mentioning my mk2 is a 2012 and my mk1 is a 2001.

Looks like the bottom of the pump "unit" has come off. I wasnt sure so I took a nosy under my mk1 to see...20211202_191934.thumb.jpg.9292138f5e06ef99e6bd7dbba471ff4e.jpg

Not sure how to reattach it to be honest.

Guessing I just have to push it back up?

The top half is the reservoir, the bottom half is the pump, you need to remove the entire assembly, and refit one to the other correctly and use a new clip to secure it unless the clip can be reused.

Intrigued to know what's caused that to happen. Clip looks to be unclipped, I think, but how? why?

Pressure relief valve stuck closed?

Looking at the large diameter of the O ring a huge amount of axial force could be produced if overpressured fluid cwere able to act on the whole diameter.

Forget the foregoing, I hadn't realised it was the reservoir, even if the breather was blocked that sort of pressure would not build up.

sounds like you will be able to make a no cost repair.

I managed to get it popped back in.

Think I got a bit more tension on that clip but time will tell if it holds.

Looks to be scrapyard writing on the other side so must have been replaced at some point before I got it.

So far its holding fluid and i've topped off the reservoir. If it holds it holds, if (most likely) it doesnt, i'll send it off to get fixed proper.

Of all the things to go wrong its certainly not something I expected! I'd be inclined to say our roads helped pry it apart lol. Most likely though it was just not put in right when it was changed.

So I did take a pic of the other side and you can see just at the top of the pump there is scrapyard writing, atleast I think it is anyway. It says "fabia" on it, naturally enough.

Hey 👋🏻 think I’m having this same issue, just replaced steering rack and pump is leaking from what seems like the back of it, how hard/easy was it to do what you did here

many thanks

Mine fell off so Iirc I used a jack to wedge it together and tightened the clip
